That one is able to recognize a good recording when we hear one.
I know lots of audiophiles that have pretty good sounding system and yet are not attending as many live concerts as I do.
I mentioned the other day the fact that here at the College of music
the many piano practicing rooms all have grand pianos yet not one sounds the same.
TO me a reference should be a constant.
Venues are all different thus not constant.
I know which of my CD's or SACD's sound good to me and these are my constant references.
Anyway this is the way I see it!! in other words a personal point of view.
And as you know in my case multi channels is not possible and on top of that SACD's are maybe 20% max of my music purchases, I could not possibly envisaged to only buy SACD's, there is so much good music to listen to.

I understand that you do not have the room/space to upgrade to multi-channel, but just to be clear a multi-channel system can play two-channel music just fine. All SACD multi-channel players play stereo discs including CDs just fine. (Of course, Blu-ray may also be a motivator to upgrade to multi-channel). Just so happens that the last disc I purchased and played is a CD (not the SACD) of "Ray Charles Live in Concert". I don't have the need to mention in the forum CDs (or vinyl) I purchase.

I may buy 20% SACD's these days, mainly for sound quality, but it is still less than 10% of my music collection and aside of the space I could not justify the extra expenses to have surround sound.
And to make it worst, a big part of my SACd's are 2 or 3 channels, and yes
I just placed an order for 5 EMI signature SACD's of which 2 are mono.
My system gives me great satisfaction as it is.
Maybe in my next life??
There is no exact, constant reference in musical performance or especially not in the sound of music, either live or recorded. I do not think that "sounds good to me" is a viable reference either. In fact, it is terrible. Good compared to what exactly?
As I said, dwelling on the micro differences between instruments, room acoustics, audio systems, etc. distracts one from hearing the macro similarities that exist in the reference of live performance.
I have nothing against the musical genres of jazz or rock, but, unfortunately, live, unamplified music in those genres is performed under highly variable, and often deplorable acoustic conditions, which vary exponentially more than does classical music in a typical hall, though some are better than others. So, live classical music works much better as a standard against which to evaluate recorded sound. You just have to shift focus from the micro differences to the macro similarities and go from there.
A good recording will be recognized by most, even by the people that do not attend "live music"
The fact that when we witness/hear music under less than ideal conditions we are able to tell that the sound is not good is proof that we have the ability to recognize good from bad.
A good recording will always be a good recording never mind our experiences. Somehow we have built in quality control
No where in this discussion has the term "good recording" been defined. I think most people here would say a good recording sounds real. That get's back to the live event as the reference. Otherwise for someone who has never heard live music the good recording simply sounds better than some other recording. Still very subjective.

" I do not think that "sounds good to me" is a viable reference"
It is to that particular listener. All we have is our subjective experience and our systems good be a perfect recreation of a live event but if it doesn't sound good to me what is the point. We all want pleasure from our systems and if we are not getting it the system is no good for us
