In Reply to: I do go to lots of live shows and have seen some good current jazz... posted by mark maloof on October 10, 2002 at 01:27:02:
I guess I must have seemed from my post to be some sort of shut-in type that only listens to recorded music (and frets over formats, but, sorry that is fun and important to me to an extent. Also, the Quad speakers I got show off, for better or worse, what gear is in front of them). Anyways, I'm 38 and have been going to shows since I was 18, probably see at least 80 to 100 bands a year (but much of it in the experimental/indie rock/free jazz/free rock vein). So, yes, I'm clued in to much current live music. And I'll be the first to say that NO system, I don't care if it costs 100 grand, can duplicate a live concert/performance. I laugh at this notion. You can get close, but to FEEL what is going on around you, you have to be there. The Ghost (Japanese band) show I saw tonight was a mind blower. Their records are wonderful, but nothing can put their live power into my (or anyones livingroom). Unless you have the money to fly them to your home from Japan.Anyways, sorry I got down on current jazz. Yeah, there is good stuff out there, see some at the Knitting Factory and Tonic, saw some nice stuff at Bimhuas in Amsterdam.
Follow Ups:
because my perception is that it's easier to find straight ahead bop or hard bop sessions than the more experimental stuff. I usually see most of the live music I catch in either SF or NYC, and I can think of quite a few places that don't (or won't) delve into the avant garde/free/experimental jazz at all or with any regularity. I've recently been spending a lot of time in my hometown of Chicago taking some art history classes at the UofC and the Art Institute, and even though Chicago has a reputation as being a hotbed for that experimental/electronic/"freaky" jazz like Tortoise, Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quarter, etc., I would say it is much easier to find straight ahead bop or hard bop sessions on any given night. Perhaps it's just the scene you're more aware of because of the band you're in?As far as which contemporary hard bop is worth checking, there was a thread recently in the Music forum about current tenor and alto sax players. I've got my own recommendations, but you should probably move this discussion over to that forum because it doesn't have much to do with hi rez. Plus you'll probably get a lot more answers over there than here on that topic.
Where does your band play? Maybe I can check it out sometime.
My band usually plays the Knitting Factory, and Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ. We used to play at the Cooler, but they are closed. We are also trying to get into Tonic. Tonic is a club that has experimental rock or jazz or electronic or free-form stuff almost every night. It's on Norfolk street, just above Delancey. You should check it out when you are in New York. My band (Hippoptamus) has been on hiatus in regards to live shows, due to working on an art grant (composing music for historical footage of Hoboken, NJ), but are getting ready to play out again. We did play at Lounge Axe in Chicago (RIP) three or four years ago, opening for Don Cabellero. You have a nice town there, I like it!
