I was in a similar position. I've had a pair of Senn HD238's for a year or two, did some mods and they sound fine, but I wanted to see what else was out there. My system is a Maverick D1 DAC/Amp, connected to a laptop via usb. The Maverick is also connected via the tube out to my main 2 channel system pre. Anyway, I researched for about a month and thought I was sold on the AKG K240MKII's. 2 sets of pads, 2 cords, and a good price. For another $100 I could step into the K701/2 or the Q701's which are said to have a little better bass. The one thing that is 100% consistent for these phones are that they need some power to sound their best. My Maverick is doing very well with tehm. The Fiio 7/9 combination is said to be good, and the Fiio 10 is supposed to work pretty good, but a little underpowered. I guess it's all in what you like to hear and how loud. I'm not a bass head, nor did I want boomy/thumpy phones. So, I got my Q701's yesterday and listened to them a few hours last nite and they've been 'burning in' ever since. They sound fantastic, very clear, airy, and involving. A night and day difference in comparison to my relatively inexpensive HD238's. I haven't tried them directly out of an ipod yet, but from what I've read it leaves much to be desired.
Follow Ups:
The 701's aren't at all like the Audeze or HifiMan headphones in terms of their ease of drive. Any half-decent desk model OTL will do fine, although almost any tube amp with output transformers will work well. I use a 2007 SinglePower MPX3 model.
