Ten years ago. Ten years. Our good friend and awesome trumpet master Maynard Ferguson passed away.
Tonight, I'm watching the tribute DVD. Right now, Lew Soloff is playing "My Funny Valentine". Lew has now also passed away. Sad.
Now, Stan Mark playing "The Way We Were".
If y'all don't have this DVD, ya gotta get it. It's a "who's who" of MF big band jazz.

A great one! R.I.P.
Yeah.
Doc Severinsen (docseverinsen.com) is the last man standing from that era. Dizzy, Clark Terry, Maynard, and others. I'll be totally bummed when Doc passes. I can't believe he's 88 and still playing. But, he takes care of himself. He once said: "I'm not going gently into that goodnight."
Now, the "new" generation of trumpet masters has taken over: Roger Ingram, Wayne Bergeron, Eric Miyashiro, ... (All dot coms if you're interested.) But they don't get the public noteriety of the past generation, which is too bad. They're all excellent musicians and great guys.
:)
I have tickets to see him later this month.
That would be in Statesboro? You might want to see if he's doing a clinic/master class during the day. He doesn't just talk about trumpet playing, he talks about life and philosophy - very inspiring guy.
Also, I bet he'll be using a Sennheiser 441 microphone. That's been his mic of choice (unless he recently changed to something else.)
:)
Doc has had a medical emergency and Bryon Stripling will be performing in his place. I pray Doc is ok.
Yes, Statesboro. Thanks for the info. I sent an email to the director of the jazz band during Christmas break asking if there will be a Master class or if the rehearsal is open, but I have had no response. I need to follow up.
