Late Saturday night ...actually Sunday morning at 2:30, I got a text from my neighbor asking me to turn it down and go to bed.
I live in a 1-acre zoning neighborhood ...so we aren't exactly on top of one another.
I had no idea how loud my little system sounded outside my house ...at 2:30 AM.
Now, if there had been machines shredding major tree limbs at the time, I think I'd have been okay.

You might be surprised at what we can hear when it's very "quiet", with no other ambient sound to mask an irritating sound or to distract our attention. Back in CMG (contemporary music group), one of the first things our teacher (Swiss composer Rainer Boesch) did was to have us all not talk or make other sounds for something like five minutes. The room was a virtual cacophony of very quiet sounds!
:)
Listening exercises are excellent ways to fine-tune your ears, I experienced them from an early age thanks to a band director with sharp teaching skills. I recommend googling around to see if there's any info online about how to utilize this tool for personal use, or even if you're a musician that has never been trained by a large-group professional.
Worked for me.
