According to the article the devices conduct current through the air. Therefore these are not vacuum devices, nano or otherwise,as there ain't no vacuum.

I noticed that too. Reading the piece, watching the video and then a published journal article implies a vacuum will work best. So for now the vacuum tube is the inspiration and a nano vacuum the ultimate goal.

Exactly, the vacuum tube and how it functions is the inspiration. Had this been an article written in British English the word "valve" would have been used which has no implication of any necessity for a vacuum, so nano vacuum tube is a bit of a semantic mis-direction. In fact the development team call it a " Photo Emission Based Device".
