In a perfect world, they would be unnecessary. Just as you find in the best symphony halls and other music venues.
In the music system, I am very fortunate to have a dedicated room of favorable dimensions where I have placed a small forest of bass traps and diffusion to provide a good acoustic. It provides good imaging and remarkably neutral response in the bottom several octaves. Sometimes, however, I use the bass contour on the Sound Lab backplate for attenuation with some content.
The HT system, however, involves compromises that many folks face. It lives in a common living space where I don't have the luxury of optimizing speaker placement nor use a range of room treatments. In that environment, I use the Emotiva processor's parametric EQ to provide attenuation for a couple of peaks. There is a null centered around 40 hz, however, that no amount of EQ boost can correct.
I find fixing the room always superior to fixing the signal where possible.
Follow Ups:
Fixing the room / sitting position is always the best , but not always possible , especially in the low bass.,
In general destructive nulls are steep and narrow and are never as obtrusive as a similar shaped peak , non null related broad dips can be corrected with eq and you can correct the destructive nulls and peaks with multiple subs
I have an extensively treated room , 500sq ft , and I still need DRC to get the best out of it , mostly in the bass
There is also another side , I have presets for low level listening , IE a digital loudness button and presets for both bright and dull recordings to make them more listenable .. no one has an exact idea of what the producers and engineers of a recording heard in the studio .. so you might as well make it pleasing to YOU
Rodney Gold Cape Town
Roon/tidal ..SBT -DIRAC minidSP DDRC22-Devialet- Giya G1's , Swarm of 4 x SVS sb13 ultra subs .. dedicated and fully treated room
...and you can correct the destructive nulls and peaks with multiple subs
I use multiple subs, but admittedly have limitations as to position for most linear response curve while avoiding localization.
so you might as well make it pleasing to YOU
To each his own. I find little value in fiddling with EQ on a recording-by-recording basis.
