I love matching amps and speakers. Fun!
Two I've put together recently - different sounding, both great:
1. Harbeth P3ESRs and Naim Nait XS, NACA5 cable
2. Primaluna Prologue Classic and (older) Vienna Haydns, AQ cable.
#2 is so good in my room. Totally underrated speaker, loves tubes.
Just passing along.
Follow Ups:
I have Primaluna PL 1 with older Vienna Bachs. It's a good combo. Tried a lot of tubes and ultimately went back to stock. Still want to try kt77s, though. Which tubes are working for you with the smaller Haydns?
I tried the Harbeth P3esrs with the Primaluna to no avail. Just couldn't get the sound to my liking. I think the high output impedance of the Primaluna just wasn't a good match for the Harbeth's curves. That's sort of a problem with the Primaluna stuff (the upside is probably very little, if any negative feedback applied). Since the amp's rather high output impedance makes for audible frequency response variations according to speaker load, it makes the whole amp / speaker matching process even more of a mystery than usual. I sold the Harbeth's for little loss and quite happily went back to my Viennas (a known quantity).
for a good sound for classic rock, a Marantz 2230 and a pair of JBL-26's do a pretty good job of rocking the house. Not TOTL but well balanced.
