Folks, please do share your opinions about this brand. No matter if it's about an amplification or a source.
This summer I bought their well-regarded EMC 1UP CD player. Even though it's discontinued, because Philips ceased the Cd Pro2 transport production, the US distributor still has a few pieces. Anyway, after having various glitches it died within a week. I was going to get my money back, but after talking to them decided to get a new unit, which started having glitches after the return period expired. Same kind of glitches the first unit had.
I sent the videos I took to my dealer, who is very helpful BTW, and after he sent them to the distributor, we got no definitive answer about the cause. Which means they still couldn't figure out what happened to the first lemon unit I had. Distributor's reply is so childish that I don't want to put it here not to embarrass him. Now that explains why Electro had that many distributors in the US, and even went out of business once.
Sorry, guys, for this long story, I'm just very frustrated. I bought this thinking it'll be my last player, but it's obviously not gonna happen.
So, again, please share your opinions and experiences, want to find out if I'm the only one this unhappy.
P.S. Since I'm fluent in Russian, I asked a similar question a while back at one of Russian audio forums (EC is quite popular there), and Electro had enough resourses and power to to have all of my posts related to my negative experience removed.

Electrocompaniet?
I'm getting old and my memory might be sketchy at times, but weren't they the ones who dressed up a standard run-of-the-mill Asian CD (or DVD) player in a fancy case and marketed it under their own name for about eight times the price of the original?
Now don't flame me, I already realize that Goldmund and another manufacturer(Lexicon or Meridian?) were guilty of the same thing, but I think that I read that Electro did it too.
I will gladly apologize and retract this post if I'm mistaken.
Lexicon was the guilty party.
So it was Goldmund and Lexicon?
Thanks,
SB
Actually, you're right. One of Electro's multiplayers is rebadged OPPO. Lexicon also has one.
I had an ECI-3 and it was one of the few solid state components that I have owned that truly had a different sound. I liked it a lot.
he'll probably able to fix it.

Some of the best sound I've ever gotten from a smaller system was with an Electrocompaniet ECI-4 driving B&W N805s with a Von Schweikert Tower of Power sub filling in the bass.
Only issue I ever ran into was the volume pot got noisy after many years & I had to give it a shot of cleaner.
The sound is very good. Actually, that was the reason I got the replacement unit. I know, there are always lemons in the production, but two in a row is too much for a luxury product.
Hope you get your $$ back & find something that will give you sonic joy.
Here's the video of one of the glitches when I put a cd inside, and close the drawer, but the display reads "Open".

Have had that problem, the door switch was out of adjustment. It was easy to get to and easy to adjust. I think it was 20 minutes total including disconnecting the player.
Thanks for the input, Fred. This is very disturbing as both the US distributor David Kocsis and his colleagues in Norway, basically said they don't know anything about that problem.
Who fixed your unit and when, if I may ask? Can I get that person's contact info?
Thanks again.
Keep us posted- erik
Here's what happened, when I finished the listening after 2-3 hours - I tried to put a new cd and the previous one was still spinning.

Apparently can't watch them without somehow logging in.
Any chance you could post them publicly?
This is the first time I upload my videos
Looks like quite the glitch to me. :(

Which is why, when buying a new component, we must take into account the solidity of the company involved. I've been burned too many times too.
I had similar experiences with the Audiolab 8000T tuner and Jan Allaerts MC1B MkII phono cartridge..... I guess stuff like this happens.
I'm just one owner, minor problem when I got it, easily fixed. Since then a good player.
I got an MF Trivista which lasted almost ten years then the Philips transport died of which h there are no more.
If you click the support tab at their site there is a decent contact form.

Thanks! for sharing- erik
it is imperative to post all experiences, positive/negative, when dealing w/ these companies, retailers or distributors. Hopefully, you can find a better spinner. Happy Listening!

I agree with you. But the problem is that majority of audiophiles are just afraid to share their negative experience, because it'll affect the resale price of the defective unit. They just try to fix it asap and get rid of it.
Personally, I don't care about that angle of the problem. I know I got a shitty brand, I wasted $5000, and if I ever sell it (I doubt it), potential buyer will know the story. The point of my original post, for the most part, is for future customers of Electro. Buyer beware.
Precisely my example- erik.
You did the correct thing here telling the rest of us about your woes.
This brand has been on my must-demo list due to all of the Audio press coverage. I value input from actual owners.
I am afraid to say that your experience of this brand and the business environment surrounding it echoes more or less exactly the situation in the UK where it is no longer available AFAIK after numerous short lived distribution deals over many years.
Absolutely no availabilty of spares or any sort of backup.
Designs good, manufacturing/quality control poor, post sales service non-existent could be applied to certain brands. I will leave you to make up your mind if it applies to Electrocompaniet.
Have you noticed that the contact points given on their website are " for business partners, dealers and distributors only."? Customers must contact their local distributor but EC appear to ensure that their identity is not displayed anywhere on their website.
I am so sorry to say that you have joined friends of mine in owning a new door stop (subject to any local repairers who could take it on, but the lack of spares tends to prevent that approach).
I appreciate your input, PAR.
The situation here, in the US, as of today, at least Based on their promises is a bit different. You can easily contact Electro's CEO Dreggevik, our distributor, and they extended the warranty up to 5 years, because they need the American market, that's where the money is. It would've been much better if they had a better quality control instead.
Their warranty doesn't make me happy, even if they honor it, because you never expect to send for a repair basically a brand new expensive product. This second unit still works, so until it's completely dead I won't send it for repairs. I know it will be dead soon, and our distributor is clueless, and I'm sure eventually they're going to send it back to Norway.
