The thing is, the child prodigy thing is fleeting. Once they turn 17-18, they are just excellent musicians, which is admirable, but normal.
Remember that kid that was a whiz at the drums 10 years ago at the beginning of the youtube era? He's now a studio musician. Nice, but nothing to ohh and ahh about.
Very few of these kids become Yoyo Ma.

I have a coworker who's son is a world-champion pianist; literally winning contests world-wide since the age of 7. It's amazing to see him play, and draws feelings of admiration.
But that admiration soon turns to sympathy when you learn that the kids have few friends and play no sports due to their rigorous practice schedule. And when you learn this is all because the parents do not save for retirement, expecting their child to support them the hair on your neck stands up.
Gives child prodigies a whole new perspective...
