Well, the detected event was "post-bang", yes? Anyways, I thought I read that it took 16 billion years for the two holes to collide. So the "young Earth" people would like to have a word with them, regardless. :)
The more interesting takeaway for me is that, sadly, Einstein was right and faster than light travel ain't gonna happen. Sorry, Trekkies. :)

They can detect lots of things. Each event has it's own signature. Like its background cosmic radiation, the Big Bang has it's own "gravity wave." A gravity wave is a complex waveform. Besides we already knew black holes were real. You don't have to be an Einstein to figure that out.

Actually you can see them quite clearly in Hubble telescope photos of galaxies. Supermassive black holes are at the center of most galaxies. You just have to know what to look for.
