but I read TK's post as less likely concerned about the technology involved and
its (possible) applications to the audiophile hobby and more concerned with the
musical/media aspect of things.
This based on his many posts regarding such.
His POV seems to reside at the elementary level regarding
actual musical performance/talent and then winding its
way to the playback level and how it is flawed from the get go.
It's a source thing.

Popular music has become so overprocessed, the notion of reproducing it with better fidelity seems pointless from the perspective of the younger masses who listen to it almost exclusively.
We probably have technologies available to really advance high-fidelity sound reproduction..... Problem is there isn't enough new blood with trained ears (because all they've been exposed to is this overprocessed music) to harness it close to potential. Heck, this could be why digital audio and consumer recordings haven't advanced much over the past 30 years.
....and non-related issue from the article. "Popular music has become so overprocessed"....but there is plenty that isn't, and genres like jazz and classical that (in general) are not, and the playback methodologies (like LP, reel-to-reel, and DSD) that can be quite remarkable.
In short, there is plenty of music available to sooth the soul, and satisfy even the most particular music enthusiast. And more comes out on a weekly basis.
As you noted, Todd's emphasis is completely different than mine. And while I understand his P.O.V. it's been proven time and again (to me) that better materials and better construction yields improved playback (even at the lowly 16 bit / 44.1KHz resolution)....that's been the emphasis for many manufacturers, not only of amplification but source electronics and especially loudspeakers.
But my interest (regarding this article) is in the potential for discovering the whys and wherefores of the changes and differences we experience with those improved materials, etc. etc. It's not magic, and to paraphrase Rosanne Rosannadanna...."it's gotta be something". And the reality is it's going to take years to find out.
things seem to be improving on a steady basis, even at my quite moderate system level.
That it will continue to improve at most all levels and that we will eventually have a solid why
behind those reason(s) will just make things... betterer.
