Hint: when you play the AOR of Bad English's "Straight To Your Heart" below, also play, from 1991, White Lion's "Broken Heart."
"Broken Heart" is another hardly-known and seldom-aired gem. And yes, I actually had a promo CD single of it. No, I did not buy it from UC Santa Cruz's radio station, KZSC. I bought it from a hole-in-the-wall record store, just off the Santa Cruz Metro Center. It brings back memories of switching from Monster Cable to AudioQuest interconnects and speaker cables. It brings back memories of daydreaming of DACs.
Because "Broken Heart" was not a hit to begin with, kids nowadays have picked up on it. They think it's cool to learn how to play the parts (made easier, because of apps). Vito Bratta's Eddie Van Halen's noodling can be heard, and the keyboards add a nice touch. Yep, today's kids understand that radio stations only play White Lion's "Wait" and "When The Children Cry." The media completely ignore White Lion's excellent "Broken Heart." Which makes the listener feel special, when she herself plays "Broken Heart."
Talk about bad timing. Just when we college students were going back for the Fall '91 semester/quarter, Bad English came out with the straight-forward mainstream rock album, Backlash . During this time, rap and alt-rock were in vogue, and it was just a month before grunge and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" wiped out popular music. My then-girlfriend and I were on the last leg of our initial relationship. But, Bad English's "Straight To Your Heart" helped give us a late boost. And when we play it now, it still gives us a boost.
When I returned to UC Santa Cruz for my junior year, campus radio station KZSC had no need for AOR. So I picked up their promo CD single of "Straight To Your Heart" for a couple bucks. One of YOU now has it. That CD single is the same one, which I brought and played at San Francisco's Ultimate Sound, which, in 91-92, was still located in the dungeon basement of the Sherman Clay (a music and piano store) building.
All of us are now older. Much older. 25 years older. And we still love, and have a thirst for, good ol' hard rock. To hear material radio stations don't play, give "Straight To Your Heart" a spin. You'll love it.

Tangerine Dream!
Here in the Bay Area, we continue to have the now-normal warm and bone-dry weather. The endless summer and desertification continue unabated.
In the summer of 1999, Len's "Steal My Sunshine" was a smash hit. With the video depicting coastal scenes, the song was even more popular here on the California coast.
The male and female singers are not lovers. They are actually siblings, Marc and Sharon Costanzo.
