Watch for this docu on Janis Joplin. The local Recording Academy chapter screened it last night, and it's a knockout. We all know how powerful she was, and we know a little about her life, but I was blown away by just how great a singer she was, and the breathtaking range of music she took on. The film's release is Nov. 27th.
And for those who want the ultimate in tragic singers-who-died-at-27, make it a double-fill with "Amy", which is also beautifully done.

Follow Ups:
Jerry does this song for her..
GRATEFUL DEAD- "BIRDSONG" (ACOUSTIC 1980).
Very nice- LWR.
Thanks! for sharing- WW.
it has been a banner year for wonderful documentaries. No doubt that JJ
was "blue". She would not have destroyed herself at such a young age.
To truly take in her raw talent- check out "Ball and Chain" from the Monterey Jazz festival via DVD/BR or a decent playback on youtube.
This is one of her very best performances, IMO.
Thanks for the post. I consider Janis the greatest.

Second note;
I really liked 'Big brother and the holding Company' as her backing band to boot. Full Tilt Boogie for sure.
thanks for the heads up. i will probably go with one of my daughters who is a big Janis fan.

I think of Nina Simone when I hear Little Girl Blue. Why is that the name of the movie?
She had the blues from an early age, with lots of bullying, culminating in high school when her class held an "ugliest man" contest which she won. For most of her life she was a very unhappy person, though the music was, for the most part, a time to be happy. (The post-performance time was always something of a struggle.) It's a compelling story, and there is lots of performance footage I'd never seen before. It's a really good job, easily on the level of "Amy."

This morning while listening to several Joplin albums I realized she recorded Little Girl Blue on the Kosmic Blues albums. Same song as Nina recorded. Did not know that.
Yep, Kosmic Blues is a good one.
