To be married really, really well.
My wife is NOT an audiophile, which is to say she has not made a study of the components that comprise a fine audio system, is not an expert on esoteric cables, the differences between moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, the reasons one might prefer belt drive to direct drive turntables, or what might distinguish Class A amplification from Class AB.
However, my wife IS certainly an audiophile, which is to say that she knows a good system In our case Magnepan speakers, McIntosh tube amplifier, Rogue Perseus preamplifier, etc.) when she hears it, has explored with me composers and musicians with which we are not familiar, using our audio equipment as tools in that exploration, and cringes visibly and audibly when exposed to music badly recorded and badly produced. In other words, she appreciates the results produced by systems assembled with audiophile sensitivity. Perhaps that's the best kind of audiophile to be!
So, as an early Hanukkah present, my wife set for herself the goal of recovering our 20-year old Magnepan speakers. She contacted Magnepan, ordered the "socks" (and underbags) which are, by the way, cut to order, and worked with a representative of Magnepan to ensure that she understood every step of the process of recovering our Maggies. Magnepan incudes illustrated directions, but the Magnepan rep provide and additional hand-drawn illustration to aid in the process. (These are first-class people, and they produce a first-class product.) My wife, Washington, DC's leading urban beekeeper, is no stranger to the use of tools, and removed the terminal plates, fitted the underbags and new socks expertly, and returned to me two Magnepan speakers in like-new condition. I am attaching photos (before and after), evidence of a job done beautifully (and better than I could have managed).
Yes, I married really, really well. Music is important in our home, and I think we're both "audiophiles."
Follow Ups:
My wife loves music as I do and enjoys the system I have set up but the best story was when I found a JBL Metregon at a house sale. The Metregon was pretty in rough shape so I had the workers I hired to move it, put it on the back porch and spent the rest of the day practicing my "it followed me home" speech. She finally got home and i sheepishly led her to the back porch and showed it to her, as soon as she saw it she said "what a cool piece of furniture you should put it in the living room". I was floored.

was my drums. If there Everything else was considered as non essential. I've sat in many lawn chairs and eaten off of many TV trays/stands while listening to music. Forty years together and I'm surprised at how much my wife has sacrificed for my music. She likes it too, but not to the same extent as I do.

You paid HOW MUCH for that electrical receptacle?!!! Are YOU nuts?

Though she did learn how to turn it on.
I've also taught her and my sons how to paint and thus evaded most painting chores lately.

i too was lucky that way. my wife loved music and much of the same music that i listen to. in her apartment, i had set up a full on separate component system with infinity monitor jr speakers on stands plus Dynaquad. it was very convincing.
we moved into a house as soon as i got custody of one of my daughters and after about two weeks she asserted "it's time to set up the Dynaquad. the way i have it set up is quite unnoticeable sonically until you turn off the rear speakers and everything collapses to the front speakers.
it's good to hear that others have had accommodating spouses instead of the decor Nazis that some wives turn out to be.

He loves music, but didn't have the resources for a decent stereo system. I lent him my Amber amp, pre, sony xa20es cdp, snell E speakers and he was truly jazzed. A month later he brings it all back stating the speakers were to big for his wife. Whata whimp.
...I sold a pair of speakers to a friend and his wife yelled, "Get those butt-ugly things out of my living room!"
They ended up divorcing about a year later...
"They look like the monoliths from 2001!" was her summation. ;-)
But now I have some smaller Magnepans in my system and she's OK with them.
self explanatory.

.
We are nearing completion of a house renovation of what will be our "last" house. I have designed the HT system to include multi zone sound at my wife's request. When I described what I wanted the media console to look like (at least 6' wide, with hidden Wireing) my wife immediately suggested a turntable for the Den ! I have a restored ARXA that will work pefectly ! And I may have enough space to include a tube amp that can be easily switched in ! Thinking a Marantz 8 would look great sitting on top of the console....
Flip the plus and minus terminals at the output of your power amp (both channels) to compensate for the rouge?
You're a lucky man, as am I. My wife at first didn't care and even tried to convince me to junk my components and get one of those cute Bose Lifestyle systems that look so nice and fit into any décor. Then she heard one and having become used to the sound of mine she realized it wasn't even close.
Now she enjoys good sounding systems and even comments to me when she hears an inferior system. She even noticed the difference when I upgraded the power cord to my amp!
A wife that appreciates good sound, now that's a keeper!
Best regards, Ralph
...like most here, my wife and I used to listen to music together a lot.
Until we had kids.
She used to complain about all the equipment in the living room, so that motivated me to build a house with a dedicated music room - no more complaints.
Now she only listens when we have friends over for dinner and we all end up there.
For her watching Grey's Anatomy or Bachelorette is more relaxing.
i did we had a few drinks and had a real good discussion on being a web designer.
My wife leaves me alone in my mancave to listen how loud I like when I like and couldnt care a whit what equipment I haul in or out ..
pops her head in now and then , after knocking of course (gotta close down that Pr0n) asks if I want coffee , beer , sex , food.
I married well too...

Thanks! for sharing. Music, is the most important thing in any home.
Very few men want to play second fiddle to a stereo :-)
While we were dating my girl friend (now wife of 31 years) used to listen to music with me for hours on end and watch the Bears, the Bulls, the CUB's, College Football and Basketball with no complaints. Then we got married.
Now, I hardly ever see her in the Music, Video Man Cave. For her it is the Food Channel (she doesn't cook, for me that is), training your dog Channel (we have no pets, go figure).
So cherish what you have. My experience would say it is unique.
That's too funny (or not) when I was dating my wife(2nd) we listened to music everyday after work and dinner, even sat together in the sweet spot in a wide chair. That lasted about 5 years until we got married. Now she just plays around in the kitchen or does work from home at night.
But I must say she does know how important music is to me and never complains about me buying and selling equipment.
Note: we both work and have a great financial system, we share a House checking account that we put in to cover the mortgage, house bills and food. Then we each have our own accounts to do what we want - This system works very well and I recommend it to anyone considering living or marrying someone
My wife is "cool" I guess I would say. Loves music, but not sitting down in the sweet spot, doing nothing else, listening to my Maggie's for time on end type.
As for what I have in my room, the only reason she cares at all is it's a big room (> 400SF) in relation to the size of our house (2300SF), and we have turning 5 and 2 year old girls. Eventually they might need to use the back part of that 17 x 24' room she feels (and she's probably right).
Now, the ball's in your court. Think of how you might return the favor. :)
Yes I will!
from Tiffany's reliably contain things that please. Sounds like she is worth it!
Esp if done with no particular reason. No anniversary, no birthday, no holiday. Just for the heck of it.
You and I are both lucky to have married well. Only, it took until my second one (and interestingly/ironically, my FIRST love) to realize it!
