I heard The Carpenters back in the early 70s at Brown County Arena (yeah, round, domed, reverberant) in Green Bay (where the world's best football team is based - just fyi).Seriously, as a young musician/budding audio engineer, knowing that such facilities are a bear to play music in, I was totally surprised at how good the sound was - damn near like a record. That sound engineer had it figured out. I wish I knew who it was - I'd pick his brain.

with my mom cuz, I was too young to travel!
I always got the impression that both Karen and Richard Carpenter were very smart with regard to production, so they would likely have given a LOT of input to the engineer. I don't know whether that would have made the engineer's job easier or harder. :D
But the sound of Carpenter recordings has always amazed me. It's great that that carried over to live shows.
