Hello all;
I am soliciting suggestions for reference level acoustic guitar recordings. It need not be exclusively acoustic guitar, but should have a lot of it in the mix.
I have sacd, cd, and vinyl for source.
Thanks in advance.

Follow Ups:
Man, I have enjoyed this album many, many times.
I also love Enrique Coria "Latin Touch" for great tunes exquisitely played and recorded.
...of his is his first - amazing. On his later ones he tried to sing - bad idea (he describes his voice as a goose fart).

Doc Watson On Stage Featuring Merle Watson
Simple pleasures.
How about some Dawg Music!
David Grisman Quntet. Tony Rice plays on this one along with Darol Anger, Todd Phillips, and Bill Amatneek.
Yes, Dawg is a fine place to start!
I had to get the LP on EBay to hear it. Fortunately, it's not too well known and the price was reasonable explanation. Killer stuff.

Gordon Lightfoot / Sunday Concert
David Wilcox / live songs & stories
(Both very well recorded)
Neil Young too. Harvest and Harvest Moon albums in particular. Best Neil Jacobs album to start with is World Blue. Beautiful music, but without vocal. NY's albums have plenty of vocal of course.
... but if not, I will. His ECM solo and small group recordings are really great, sonically as well as musically. I couldn't pick just one if I tried.
Naxos has a whole series of solo guitar recordings (probably several dozen
by now). The fi is excellent for the most part, as is the playing.
Merle Travis: Walking the Strings.
Doc Watson was a master of the acoustic guitar, and all of his recordings
that I have heard are at least sonically excellent.
Byran Sutton has made several excellent recordings for Sugar Hill.
Dan Crary has recorded several albums, all sonically excellent. His
playing is off the charts.
And then there's Tony Rice, who may be the finest acoustic guitarist
playing today.
Happy listening.
Perhaps the greatest classical guitar duo of all time, certainly the best still performing. Some of my favorite music, period. I've had the privilege of seeing them in performance a couple times. They breathe as one.
Michael Hedges (phenomenal), Tuck Andress, Alex DeGrasse, Earl Klugh, Phil Keaggy, Otmar Liebert, Tommy Emmanuel, Al Di Meola - so many great ones...see also Gibson's Top 50 list below...
To all of you for your input.
I have a LOT of "YouTubing" to do so as to narrow it down a bit.
Thanks.

I used to do mushrooms with an amazing flamenco guitarist who used to show up at every party with his guitar back in 1988 in LA.
My band was called The Peckinpahs (voted Top 10 Best New Bands LA Weekly Readers' Poll 1989).
Don't remember his name, but he was truly exceptional.

...Tony Furtado's "Bare Bones".I heard Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream" from this CD on the radio and it knocked me out - just him on an acoustic guitar.
I had to have it - great recording.

Anything - "Hallmark Sessions" "Quietude" and a self titled direct disk recording from 1979 are some of my faves.. of course he mixes it up with his Les Paul...

Acoustic Guitar Summit (name of group) are four virtuosos from Oregon, play some gorgeous and complex arrangements of standards and originals.
Hawaiian slack key: ANYTHING on Dancing Cat record label.
Flamenco guys: Ottmar Liebert, Oscar Lopez, Paco DeLucia, Bendetti & Svoboda, Gino D'Auri, Rod Mobasher, many others.
The first Hot Tuna album. Jorma at his fingerpickin' finest.
That's just a few faves off the top of my head. All are good to exceptional recording quality.
Live solo acoustic German import CD. Great guitar sound!

In addition to the classic Hedges, there are several other fine acoustic guitar recordings on the Windham Hill label.
A wonderful Tony Rice album is "Duets" with David Grisman. Each cut features a different classic guitar and mandolin. Will your system quality allow you to differentiate them?
I enjoy all the Alison Krause and Union Station albums I've heard, great audio quality and bluegrass instrument virtuosity.
Speaking of virtuosity, several of Doc Watson albums have been reissued so not difficult to find.
For classical recordings the Romero family consistently offers high quality.
Now for a "sleeper" - look for "Old And In The Way" with Jerry Garcia (yes, the same one!) and Dave Grisman. Great fun bluegrass style with one of the Dead.
Not sure why some others ignored the Acoustic request, but lots of worthwhile recordings have been suggested.

One of the dew guitarists who have mastered both the acoustic and the electric guitar,
The other guitarists who stands out for me with this talent is Richard Thompson though he has never made a solely acoustic guitar record that I am aware of.
RT has recently released a solo acoustic album of "hits" called Acoustic Classics.
"Mother Knows Best" "God Loves a Drunk".

Just heard him play a week ago and got the new record.
How that passed me by?
THANKS for the notice!
Audiophile CD. They list the microphones, cables, etc. used. Musically really nice as well, if you are into that kind of thing.
Philip Catherine - guitar
Christian Escoude - guitar
Didier Lockwood - violin
A great LP.

Here's another: John McLaughlin's "Que Alegria". Acoustic guitar with an electric backing band, and very good sound quality.
Also, look for the various guitar recordings on the Water Lily Acoustics label, particularly "A Meeting By the River".
Happy listening,

Beyond the Missouri Sky - stunning performance and great recording!

Chet Atkins and Liona Boyd (Chet's wife) with John Pell and John Knowles. If you were into vinyl, I'd also recommend Chet's solo album "Alone".There is no doubting the consummate skill of Chet Atkins in any case but many of his album concepts are somewhat "cheesy". You must listen to him in those rare recordings where he's *alone* or *almost alone*.

Chet Atkins and Les Paul. Amazing stuff and their commentary is great!

That's another good one.
Nice playing, wonderful Martin guitar sound, intimate (recorded in his living room). He sings on these songs, quietly accompanied on a few tracks by his beautiful and talented song writer/performer wife Tia Sellers. I have met this wonderfully engaging couple a few times and their love for and dedication to their musical craft is inspiring. So talented.

Dueling Guitars from the August Rush soundtrack
Tony Furtado Amazing Grace from Bluecoast
Try her live, solo acoustic album "a gogo". Not a perfect recording, but very good, I'd opine. It is one of my go-to albums (even on redbook CD) for component evaluation -- because I really like the album and because I am very familiar with it, and with the way Patty sounds live (having seen her several times).
Many of her studio albums sound very, very good -- but they feature some studio trickery and aren't as natural sounding as 'a gogo'.
all the best,
mrh
If you like something a bit progressive, try California Guitar Trio.
One of the great acoustic guitar albums, ever.... In my humble opinion.
I still do have to hide it in my record collection. Yes, it does contain beautiful music that is well played and sensationally well recorded on top of that. But, I don't want anyone to know that I have a Windham Hill record.
I could never relate to the guilt over playing DMP, Windham Hill, or Sheffield Labs labels.... Or even Naxos.... If it's great music, I don't care what the label is.....
Same goes for Diana Krall, for that matter... (Although her latest release is "Auto-Tuned", which is a deal breaker.... )
It's somewhat of a departure from his usual stuff.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
Craig Chaquico - Acoustic Planet is really quite good.Especially the last track at the link below.

Don't know if this is the right kind of reference being a live recording, but Joe plays so well the audience becomes silent while he plays solo acoustic guitar.

I love "Dreams and all that Stuff"
Lots of other choices.
I particularly like his debut 6- and 12-String Guitar and his collaboration with Mike Gordon on the calypso inspired album Sixty Six Steps .
Don't know if it's reference level, but it's a fun listen -w- chatter between songs (on CD).

Anything on the MA label.

There are a lot of good performance of that piece. I particularly like Pepe Romero's, and I have a John Williams conducted SACD that I like too for its perspective.
saw Pepe Romero perform it live a few years ago with the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra; a Bay Area amateur orchestra that my wife played in at the time.
Great seats at Flint Center Cupertino, second row center. ;-)
Sonny Boy Williamson (Blues harp and vocals) with Matt Murphy on acoustic. Very good guitar work.
