I've had the pleasure of owning the Aune Audio S16 DAC for quite awhile now and I am impressed with it. I first tried the DAC with the balanced outputs into my preamp, and then and am now using the RCA outs into my preamp.
Sound is very good, the DAC has inputs for Toslink, AES, USB, SPDIF, and the USB section supports up to DSD 128 and 32 bit 384khz PCM. What I've been doing is using a Sonos Connect into the SPDIF section as well as using a Windows laptop connected to the USB port and upsampling everything to DSD 128, as well as playback of native DSD 128 sound files.
Interesting is that the chipset uses the AK4495s DAC from Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corp as well as very new technology for the USB portion of the DAC. Sound is really good I have to say again and there are numerous filters I can try and have fiddled with.
I won't get into detail comparing pieces of music no one will ever hear or have the patience to listen to, however sound is very good. Is it completely levels above anything else? That's up to the listener, I also use a Bel Canto DAC3 and both the Aune and the Bel Canto have their strengths and weaknesses. What is also interesting is the Aune has so many features for $699 while other DACs I have owned cost more federal reserve notes. Aune is a Chinese company and they stand behind their product. The engineering is world class at such an affordable price point if you put it into perspective what you are getting for your hard earned money.
Musically the DAC is rewarding to listen to, sound depends on how well recorded the music is you listen to. I've found well recorded albums absolutely glorious.

I clicked submit to digital and didn't preview the review (wound up in general), also noticed the review is not bold and not said to be a review in the post subject link.
...but of course!
I didn't see that I was looking for it.
