Here's what i found in the $400 to 600 u.s. range, NEW, and based on reviews worth the price.
1. integrated amp - Musical Paradise, model MP-401 (tube/24 watts per side depending on tubes used; designed in Canada; headphone jack); cost - $700 u.s.
2. loudspeakers - Blumenstein Orcas (single driver; hand-assembled; made in U.S.A.); cost - $500 u.s.
3. {C.D. player/Turntable - not researched yet}
note - i have not listened to the above equipment and/or how well they might integrated together. i also have no experience dealing with the above two companies.

You have a budget but then put together just 2 pieces of a system and one is over the max budget and the two you mate is more than 2x the max amount. How are you successful meeting your goal especially, as you still need music sources. Cabling is not an issue as you can buy all that for less than $20.
As for whether they mate and sound good as a combo is a separate issue. Many threads ask about putting combos together related to something many responders have never heard but they just favor something that may work.
You could put something together in the price range you mention using a chip amp. These apparently sound good from reports by others. There are many very decent speaker systems for a couple of hundred. Use a tablet for a music source. A Blackberry Playbook though not a great seller has an excellent audio system even through the headphone output. It also has a HDMI output. Using various apps available for it you can stream most fm stations and the usual streaming and download sites. These can be bought new for less than $100. I use mine this way.
Dvd players can be had for as little as $25 new and can beat expensive CD players of only a couple of years ago. FM stereo tuner, sure. Takes a little searching now but the Grundig/Eton S350D and DL have stereo line outputs and the earphone output is stereo. A quite decent portable. These originally sold for about $300 but I have seen new ones for less than $50. There are other portables with similar capabilities that are inexpensive.
To bring it together you will need a multi input selector. These can usually be had in the $10 range. Nothing vintage. Of course there are those all-in-one executive and micro systems. I have heard a number of them that were decent; usually the speakers where the limiting factor. Different speakers can kick them up and give very decent sound. I just gave a Philips system away. I included some better speakers and with them it sounded decent enough that I could have used it in the office.

First of all I'm not sure if "mid fi" is in the $400-$600 range; more like super low range...in any event, I could carve out a decent system for those emerging from a financial set back, and until they can get back on their feet (been there done that):Triangle Comete speakers ($400 used)
Emotiva integrated Fusion Flex ($250 new)
Add the dvd player you already own and you're on your way..
If you don't own one go down to any thrift store and grab a used CD player for $20.Super low range ($250):
I have this in my garage-
Onkyo TX SR503S 7.1-channel home theater ($150 used)
Pioneer speaker designed by Andrew Jones; SP-BS21 $50 new, Amazon
Thank me later.

It appears to me that what you are saying is that it is possible to get components better than run of the mill budget ones in the $600 range. So your components as chosen will be better than say a NAD 326 BEE and perhaps Dali Zensor3. You think that the Tube amp would be better and the single driver speaker would also be better. Need listening comparisons.
Bill
that i found; would appreciate any understanding you have of these components; not saying i know them and by chance one is tube and one is single-driver and would they be a match in hell or heaven, i just would't know.
roger wang
but again it depends on individual's budget and expectation.
that's hardly a budget system in true components, is it?
roger wang
Never heard of the stuff. Is it cheap chinese crap? How do you know the gear is mid-fi in sound? If you don't or cannot verify the sonic quality then it might not even be worth the moderate asking price. Once you add a source and cables it is priced in a range that non-audiophiles would simply call "expensive".

As many times as you choose to communicate from an email address that does not function properly?

Sure.

Can't think of a good reason. Why not use a real email return address? Can't you see your part in this? Of course not. Just like you can't see why you brought the ire of others upon you.

Yes, NOW we know. But we were not able to respond to you directly. You know why? Because you communicate from an email address that does not function properly.

Regardless of what you think about our moniker, observations, conclusions or directives, our decision stands. Feel free to continue to violate the directive delivered in December (http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/general/messages/68/688508.html) if a three-month vacation is what you seek.

to a.a. member--
i did read your posting but frankly could not take it seriously as you have a moniker that seems laughable ("goofy" you said). you seem part of the owners.
it seems you have matter backwards - this three sox goes after me and very meanly/nastily.

why a mid-fi system?
because that's the point and purpose of my posting.
because i don't see any recommendations in this reasonable expenditure for hi-fi sound.
because this range does not get taken seriously.
answer satisfactory enough? care to be more cynical and critical?? - just sign up and join the crowd of Audio Asylum. you've met your match.

Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
.
Hmmmmmmm....
going by my prior posting where not one inmate advised on a system in this price range (except for vintage equipment in very used condition and who-knows-what condition)
roger wang
You never asked for recommendations, you asked to name the poor performers in the 400-600 price range, a much different question. If you want recommendations...ask for some.
> > can you answer for your decision of why i am taken to task
No, because you are using an non-functional email address. Of course, if you wish to go through your dirty laundry in public, we can do so.
For now, suffice it to say that the two posts about which you whined were responses TO YOU from three_sox LONG AFTER our directive for you to cease stalking three_sox. We are not surprised that he tired of your antics.

Dennis Murphy modded Pioneers bookshelf speakers
Dayton 10 in sub plus caps for high pass filter
Marantz PM5004
Schiit Modi DAC
Total approx $725
The speaker set up. I have heard the integrated in another system and I own the bigger brother version of the DAC. At this price point the speaker system will drive the SQ. As long as you don't expect ear ringing volume levels the speaker system sounds great. My kids is driven by a 30 plus year old NAD 3020. Surprisingly excellent vocals.

where were you when you were needed?
care to attest to named components?
roger wang
and save yourself much trouble and embarrassment.Well, maybe not the embarrassment part since you seem far beyond that.
And, who are "they"?

okay so shoot me for going over $100 for one component (the other was less than $600 max, so it equals out).
have you heard the named components?
"they" is this Audio Asylum and their dismissive posture in my previous posting - maybe you missed it.

Roger ,I own the MP301MK3 from the same company and have enjoyed it everyday from the day I set it up 6 months ago. I run it every single day from 6 am until 9 or 10 pm for 6 months straight to break it in. both with music and for my TV sound :) I will be purchasing the MP-501 V3 W/KT120's in a few months, pairing it up to some MMG's I am sure I will be just as happy with it.
.
and this one too, make no freakin' sense!
What do you mean by mid-fi? From the sound? From the price? What do you mean by budget? $400-600 total? $400-600 per component (BTW, average Joe would not consider this budget)?
"note - i have not listened to the above equipment and/or how well they might integrated together."
In other words, you are simply making a short LIST of "mid-fi price range" EQUIPMENT, not a SYSTEM. One has to ask: with your admission of having no experience with the above mentioned equipment, what's the point of this exercise?
a) i am honest in admitting it is only a list, i'm not pretending to know how the equipment fits together
b) i don't see anyone else troubling themselves to put together a ''system'' (so-called) - your posting is exceptional.
c) my last posting netted no worthy answer on the topic despite the wealth of experience in components from inmates.
answer good enough?

And it hasn't been!
Integrated amp and speakers, no source or cables. One can be certain it will be a noise free budget system with no music. You can invite your friends over to looks at it, nice!
Edits: 03/27/15
and supply the rest of what's missing?? prefer to jump on any suggestions instead, eh? know your language's saying "rain on one's parade"?
in my posting, i admitted i needed - through no help from you or others - a source and would research it. where's your desire to research? oh yeah, dumping on original postings is your specialty. forgot about it.

Simply add a Monster (tm) or similar cable and there they go!
