...The Mamas and Papas actually had a lot of great songs and albums in the 1960s.
Check them out - I looked forward to their new ones along with the new Beatles albums every few months.
They were the first of the LA harmony bands, along with the Beach Boys, who led to the Byrds, CSN and the Eagles.
Follow Ups:
I understood middleground to be primarily looking for one hit wonders, but also opening the responses to songs that we love to listen to on dreary winter days even if not by one hit wonders. So I elected to give an example of both.
I know that The Mommas and Pappas were huge, so didn't mean to suggest that they were one it wonders. It's just that I couldn't think of a better song from the modern era that I enjoy listening to more in the winter.
AH-HA, on the other hand, pretty much defines the one hit wonder to me.
That said, now that I think about it, I gather that AH-HA might have continued to do other stuff that sold well in Sweden, just like Psy will likely prove to be a one hit wonder in the U.S. for Gangnam Style, even though he was very popular both before and after in South Korea. So, it's jurisdictional!

By Zager & Evans...
Talk about a one-hit wonder.
...the song "Sings" by the 5 Man Electrical Band.
...definitely one hit wonder but audiophile recording quality on that song.
