I was greeted today by three men dressed on black at my door. (but all scruffy clothes and sloppy beards, beer bellies hanging out..) They demanded my audiophile credentials and told me to get them back I would have to spend at least $5,000 over the next year on audiophile gear.
If I do not my audiophile status will be revoked permanently.
WTF?

LOL!
Ha. What you don't know won't/might/can hurt you, but... If you get a large bag of specially treated 'crystals' and place them strategically in your room/home, your system will not only sound better, but you will have done it for only $29.95 (plus shipping and handling with cryo-treated gloves), thus saving more than $4,900. You might not even need all of them. So when the goons come back, just throw the remainder in their faces, and their dark energy will disappear.

Only way I can get mine back is to never post in the cables asylum!
And the results were a stunning new sense of realism you never before achieved..
I bet then you would get your audio credentials back.
Your system has disappeared, leaving only the music.
A grand feeling, no?
The rest become professionals/insiders.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
Yeah, and if you spend more on music in the next year than gear, you'll also lose your credentials.

I haven't made a gear change since 2012 and my entire system
doesn't add up to the suggested single component minimum of
$3K required to achieve audiophile status.
So, I was paid a visit...
Sometimes its just better to be a music lover than an audiophile.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Thats nothing, I came home from work yesterday and my
girlfriend of 14 years had dusted my system. And all I said was "thank you it looks good" .
instead of obsessing over it, you get an automatic six month audiophile reprieve.

Shirley Temple: I don't go all the way, either.

Money over time...I went almost 7 years without any changes, other than the occasional cable or two...nothing over $500...
Then I turned 50 in 2013, went a little nuts...speakers, amp, pre-amp, power conditioner and cables all the way around...(all used mind you)...but I bottomed out around $15K...
I actually got reinstated, BUT they said I need a new DAC, Music Server and Ipad control by the end of 2015 so the pressures on...it can be really expensive to buy back in if you let it go too long...
They also said I could just send Noel Lee at Monster at check for $416.66 per month to meet the $5k a year requirement...they reassured me that Noel would put the money to good use and sue some poor mom and pop place that has the word monster in their business or product...I can just feel all that good karma coming way...I hear Mr. Lee will be named the 15th Dalai Lama...
Thanks

"I was greeted today by three men dressed on black at my door. (but all scruffy clothes and sloppy beards, beer bellies hanging out..)"
What's wrong with you? Say, three women and sell the story.
"They demanded my audiophile credentials and told me to get them back I would have to spend at least $5,000 over the next year on audiophile gear."
Tell them, they had to knock because the doorbell requires electricity.
"If I do not [meet 5Gs] my audiophile status will be revoked permanently."
Placing a number on status can be a slippery slope.
.
...WTF?
Laughing...
I am able to provide proper documentation/credentials for ten cents on the dollar*
that will satisfy and prevent those three stooges from bothering you for the next year.
*May be willing to trade for a phono pre.
