Some HDCDs do not implement the full HDCD capability. Perhaps the KC disc is one of those and the Cary doesn't flag it as such...

No personal experience with this player, but having many HDCD discs and HDCD players in the past, I looked into this a bit. Your Cary player doesn't appear to use the 'normal' decoding process for HDCD in that the DSP-300 filter in it "uses software licensed from Pacific Microsonics," rather than a PM chip you'd probably find in older HDCD players, to decode HDCD discs. So it might not be 'fully' decoding the HDCD disc material. Then again, because the Cary can decode material up to 24 bits and upsample up to 768kHz, it might be doing more than just decoding your HDCD discs - and that's what you're hearing. Are you setting the upsampling filter at 44.1 when playing an HDCD disc? I would think that would be the proper upsampling filter for an HDCD disc - and, then again, I don't know if doing that would really have an affect. What are you hearing when playing an HDCD disc that doesn't seem proper? The Cary sure seems like a nice player. Sorry couldn't be more help.
By the way, you should probably be posting this query over on the Digital Asylum. I just quickly did a search there and found the following post on the subject.
Excellent- Webnick!
