Picked up these wall hanging cabinents from Ikea to store my CD collection. The box sets are included for the sake of the photo and to fill empty space. This gives me plenty of room for expansion. With the glass door option and glass shelf options it was less than $300.

I may even have room for a brace of those! Good find!
And, I have an IKEA within a reasonable drive.
Too much is never enough
HI gooner58,
Can you provide the IKEA model number for those cabinets?
Thanks
HA
Here's a link to the Ikea Besta series. There's all kinds of ways to put this stuff together - the units come with wood shelves, I bought the optional glass shelves. They come without doors and there are several choices. The wall mount kit is extra too.

Yours is a very elegant and tasteful solution to a very common storage problem. I got tired of free standing racks taking up valuable floor space.
I decided to incorporate storage into plans for my dedicated room. This is the final result. The enclosure was built off site and later inserted into the wall. The shelves are solid oak and adjustable.
Beautiful pic! House13-
what comapny makes this product?
Thank you. The in wall cabinet was made from scratch by the contractor who built the dedicated room it is in. It was planned in advance when the room was thought out. He made the cabinet in his shop and left a space in the wall to accommodate it before finishing the wall and closing it in. That is a firewall and framed with 2 x 6 lumber. The shelves are adjustable and actually consist of two oak boards each, 1/4 inch over 1 inch for firm support. The stain is dark cherry to match the wood trim in the remainder of the room. I have almost 700 CD's in there now and still have room for many more.
Could i get the dimensions?
The overall dimensions require the following wall opening: 73" x 37 1/2." The cabinet depth is 6 1/4." 1 1/4" extends forward beyond the wall surface so the cabinet fits in the opening created by 2 x 6 framing with solid foam panel insulation behind it in the wall. 1/4" trim surrounds the outside cabinet edges to bring the protrusion to only one inch. There are 10 shelves if you include the very bottom of the cabinet. There are 9 adjustable shelves each of which is 1 1/4" in thickness.
Of course, this is for my application. You can build this in any size you may like. I hope this helps.
Yes, House13, very helpful indeed!
I like your bookends and the step stool. Great!

I could use something like that for my somewhat recent CD purchases. I have them in various baskets right now. The bulk of my collection has already been 'ripped' to my music server so those CDs are down in the basement dungeon out of site. ;-)
Really nice, OP.
... and I don't have an especially large collection.
I love the music of ... ... Gustav Mahler
It's an evolution. Though I pride myself in not having much chaff in my collection there's no question I've often been forced to purge because I can only store so much in it. At one point I got rid of several hundred collectible LPs, mostly duplicate versions of my favorite records, plus almost 125 Jazz and 60 Classical lps I wanted to listen to, because of space (and perceived time) limitations. In hindsight what could I do? Stop buying new music? Too much good stuff and not enough time - but no doubt if it weren't for storage space my collection of vinyl would be much larger than it is currently.
My ~300 CD collection used to be stored on top of my custom record cabinets in CD holders but I was almost out of CD space. I've got room for 1800 records but that's almost full. Moving the CDs frees up space for vinyl and gives me room to store new CDs. My download collection is my fastest growing set but I am still picking up 3-4 records or CDs a month.
Could talk all day about experiences storing music media from milk crates, to cinder block shelves to custom cabinetry and more. Sure would like a permanent solution but it's not going to happen.

Beautiful pics!
can you tell me the dimensions of each box/cube?
is it all (1) piece or (3) separate ones?
They're about 25 inches tall by 24 inches wide by 8 inches deep (without the door which adds more than 1/2 an inch depth).

Thank You! Goober58.
To answer you question it's a modular setup - you can have as many side by side and/or top to bottom that will fit on you wall.

This is my computer lab. And yea one of my nice stereos is in here with 4 computers, our network and our printer. With the low to moderate back ground listening I do in this room I hope I don't have problems - but for sure if the glass interferes with my listening I'll make a post. Thanks for the heads up - this could be an issue - other doors, or none at all could be chosen.
All my rooms are hard - we have 0 drapes and 0 carpets We have wood or cloth folding blinds on some windows but most of them having no coverings at all. We have a concrete foundation covered with wood or stone.

They are totally great looking and I am going to give them a look. Thanks for the great photos.

How many discs can you put in one cabinet?
And isn't it tricky to get three of them on the wall in a line like that? How do you know you've hit the stud for each one of them?

You can always cut two pieces, top and bottom, of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood 3" or 4" wide the length of the cabinets and screw them to the studs and then screw the cabinets into the plywood, then you can hang them pretty much where ever you want.

These come with an aluminum panel about 3 inches tall and as long as the cabinet that screws onto the wall (beams). Then you set the cabinet onto the panel (it'll set there without any bolts) then bolt the cabinet onto the panel. The hardware on the cabinet lines up perfectly with the threads on the aluminum panel..

Thanks. I had to look for the beams - I found 5 and am using a couple of heavy duty dry-wall anchors too. They come with an extension that allows them to more easily connect side by side, and a different piece of hardware to facilitate up and downif needed. You can see my 4 ft level in one of the photos - I needed it. The doors are adjustable in all directions for those who insist on everything lining up just perfectly - I have little patience for such fine tuning.
Looks like I can get about 60 CDs per row per cabinet. That's 540 plus whatever I can put on the top shelf in each box. Looks like about 600 CDs inside.
