I've heard that Mr. Curl's design has gotten great reviews in the latest issue of TAS. Since I don't subscribe to it, can anyone enlighten me with some details?:)

The JC3 is explosively dynamic and dead quiet. You may not like its sound but if your unit is noisy you have a defective unit. Period. This is one of the quietest phono pre's I have ever heard (the best was the Pass Xono). On the negative it has a certain whiteness to the higher frequencies but I'm quibbling here. Tight dynamic bass, a fleshed out midrange, black backgrounds but not the best treble finish. For the money its superb which in my opinion reflects a designer who knows where to spend money and design a great product. If I needed an adjustable impedance preamp I would look at the JC3+, otherwise the original JC3 is superb.
Bought the original JC3 after all the rave reviews, noisy and no balls! Yes the JC3+ is better but not by leaps and bounds. Maybe I'll wait for the + + version.
I was using a JC3 for about a year and found it to be a vary capable phonostage. When the JC3+ was released I was immediately interested. I first heard and saw it (despite not looking any different from the front) at RMAF in 2013 and bought it in early 2014. Sonically, the + is a big step up. Amazingly quiet, better dynamics and the variable load, dual potentiometers are a real plus. I talked with Richard Schram at RMAF this past October about all that goes into the manufacture of the + and for the money, it is one impressive unit. In fact, when I demo'd a $5500.00 phonostage in my system against the JC3+, the + won hands down. Read the reviews, they are very, very accurate because the JC3+ is certainly impressive. If you want to know for sure, I suggest trying a few different brands / models in your system if conveniently possible. That will tell you exactly what you want to know. But if your question is specifically about the JC3+, in my opinion, and from first hand knowledge, I think it is a remarkable product.
then one designed by John Curl is a no-brainer.
And if you can find a John Curl designed product built by the late Bob Crump, price should be no object.
I think Bob has passed before the op amp based phono stage was designed? I remember he was involved with the JC1 and 2.
back in about 2005? A year or so after this picture as taken at the Parasound/CES party in 2004. Still have the Misty River CD I purchase at the event.
Yep, that's about 10 years ago.
But I was speaking of John Curl designed gear in general, not this particular phono pre.
I just saved a copy of that picture. Hope you don't mind? Bob and John stopped here and spent the night. John went on to visit family and Bob and I drove north to Vancouver Washington. We met Ted Smith at a nice restaurant. After dinner we drove a few blocks to a venue and met Misty River and took in their show. The next night we went to a local club and saw Jen Chapin. She had a guy playing bass with the last name of Crump. We all shared a table when they took a break. Bob and the other Crump talked family trees.
Howdy Mike
Here we are right before the show...

I am laughing at that. Thanks Ted. It was a good night for sure. Happy Holidays.
I think the JC-3 may have gotten a product of the year award in the current issue of TAS. As soon as I figure out how to increase the font size I'll let you know. May have just been an ad.
I thought maybe the Vendetta was back.
The review of the Parasound JC 3 + is posted at the TAS website in the equipment reviews section.
