I thought is was just high dollar ...
Follow Ups:
Check out the number of uber expensive member systems featuring McIntosh gear here: AudioAficionado.org, particularly founder 'MasterLu.' Evidently, these folks with $250K+ systems think it's pretty good stuff.
Oh, and here's a post about AudioAficionado on another audio forum, What' Best.com:
"One of my LEAST favorite sites is now the apparently well viewed "audioaficionado.org" site.
I see they have 30K members
Not only are my privileges now suspended over there....I have NO idea why, BUT when I was posting, I was usually flamed to death in about one microsecond
MasterLu ( I think he is one of the founders) was NOT impressed if anyone dared to say anything detrimental about his beloved Mac gear.. I had the bad taste to in my first post no less, to opine that my SF GH's were superior to the later SF M's and that IMHO Mac gear is NOT a good match to the SF speakers and the GH's in particular.....My flame suit immediately caught fire and I was engulfed
Did I say I was banned form the site...Oh yeah, now I remember why
Any of you guys a member over there ( Should be called the Mac lovers site, IMO)....be careful, be very careful
What other sites are you guys banned from?"
the big mono blocs are sure impressive just to look at. If I had them, I wouldn't care how they sound.
interesting definition of bliss.....
by the way, from your system, i see you don't have CIAudio power amp - any reason?
roger wang
Well, the Cary CAA1 was bought as a experiment just to see what a ice amp sounds like. I ended up kind of liking it, very smooth and none fatiguing.
Since I added the CIAudio passive pre, which is also my first time trying a passive, I have though about the CIAudio amps, but I really do not want mono blocs for this system, I just have no more power outlets for another power supply. If they made a stereo version I may try one.
AB.
I listened to the 600 wpc monos with the B&W 802diamonds and the music just effortlessly oozed out of the speakers into the room.
Then they tried to tell me how good the Rotel gear was and it would be hard to tell the difference for the money. WRONG! They used the latest Rotel Separates and CDP driving the B&W803Ds and the same music struggled to get out of the speakers compared to the Mc System.
The 3rd setup they had was with the Mc 3channel amp driving Sonus Faber Olymipca IIIs which was also very nice but I did not get to spend enough time with that setup to hear what all the rave on the Olympicas is all about. I thought the 802Ds sounded pretty damn good but I suppose if the SFs were driven with the 600wpc monos, they would have shined better.
I guess I will have to go back and take a listen. I just walked by and took a quick look.

I think that Mac gear might be considered both high dollar and high end but, IME, their amps seem to require more careful than usual loudspeaker matching for the best results.
McIntosh makes great gear, musical sounding and their amps are 2nd to none. With the autotransformers that can match any speaker design including electrostatics.

For some reason, the Big Mac amp that used to be here at my local hifi shop had trouble driving their large KEF floorstanders. A much smaller and cheaper Marantz amp they in stock had no problems driving the very same speakers.
I'm not saying that the Mac amp was not great sounding (with the proper speakers), well built, and cool looking. I would have loved to have owned that amp. It's just that, autoformers or no, it couldn't drive certain speaker loads very well...
Define "trouble driving". Your fans are dying to know...
Mostly, I'd define it as producing thin bass and discombobulated mids and highs.
And don't ask me to define "discombobulated", because deep inside I'm sure you know what that is.

This was a few years ago, but if I remember correctly it was the MC-302 stereo amp w/ 300 watts per channel. I am not certain which taps were used but I was under the impression that they had tried everything, to no avail.
Great witness!
Well, my name isn't Inspector Columbo so I guess I naively trusted in their setup abilities.
Maybe your real name is Inspector Columbo? When I feel your nose poking into my ass-cheeks I imagine that it is...
Columbo was a Lieutenant.
True, but he was constantly inspecting - mostly for incriminating evidence. Just like middleground! Here's another possibility...

because the lieutenant was almost always correct in his suspicions.
"Almost"? Sorry, that's not quite good enough for AA.Hey, did Colombo ever look in the mirror? His hairdo and general demeanor would suggest not...

While Columbo's appearance was outwardly disheveled it's generally assumed by enthusiasts that it was a calculated effort on his part as a misdirect to the suspects he was pursuing.
That being said, yes, he did look in mirrors. In Double Exposure (my personal fav episode) he makes several comments to Dr. Keppel (the murderer portrayed by Robert Culp in a performance that can only be described as *MWUAH*) that he's keeping notes of details about the case that just don't add up on his shaving mirror in an effort to keep them top of mind.
An episode you might enjoy would be "Old Fashioned Murder". Columbo winds up inadvertently getting a haircut and style as he questions a hairdresser. In the following scene he questions a man in a watch shop and frequently admires his new hairstyle in a mirror on the display counter.
was an utter failure at driving my Apogee Scintilla speakers. It did not have anywhere near enough current to manage the 1/2 ohm that the speaker would drop to at certain frequencies.
Were those Apogees the only speakers your Macs had trouble driving?
I had JBL 4330's before the Apogees and it drove them perfectly. Before that I had Infinity's and that worked too.
I still admire that Big Mac amp that I could never afford. I love the way those things look and I'm sure they can sound very good - with the right loudspeakers.
could not power the Scintillas....
Many have tried, I'm sure.
