Hello,
I'd appreciate any advice you have for me.
I'm looking at buying a new SUT. I intend to buy a new ZYX Cart 0.24mV. My current cart is a Benz MicroGold 0.5mV .
My SUT has a ratio 1:16 on the low gain and 1:32 on high gain.
I prefer the sound using the low gain.
My questions are:
1. At the same preamp settings should I expect the volume to be less with the Zyx?
2. If so, what ratio for the Zyx should I need to help produce the same volume as the Benz ?
3. Can I assume all SUT's with ratio 1:16 create the same volume gain?
4. Is it possible for a SUT with lower ratio to produce a the same volume
volume as another of higher ratio? Are other factors at work here?
Thx so much for your help.
Bob

BTW, there's a used Bob's Devices 1131 (Blue) SUT up for sale on Audiogon.
Thank you Abe for link!

Thank you very much for all your comments.
I really likes Bob's Devices Cinemag. I own the previous model 3440 (Bob said that was originally designed more for microphones). Its low gain is1;16. However, Bob has recommended the Sky30 which has a low gain of 1:15 (that is more airy).
But i don't understand how that will help equalise volume in the Zyx without using the high gain.
I prefer the sound on the low gain setting. Abe stated that the loss in volume is 6.4 db with he zyx.
Is there a high quality SUT that can deliver that in a low gain setting ?
Or may be I'm imagining that there is a sound difference between using the high versus low gain ?
I'll post this subject up in the Vinyl section as Abe has suggested.
Thx everyone.
Bob
When you change the SUT settings you also change the impedance load on the cartridge. This may be why you prefer one setting over another.
When you change from low gain to high gain you're changing more than just the gain. You are changing the cartridge loading.
The best sounding cartridge loading will be cartridge dependent.
If the cartridge loading when using the high gain setting is correct for the cartridge in use then not only will you have high gain but also good sound.
Conversely, if the cartridge load is incorrect for the cartridge in use when using the low gain setting then even if the gain is correct the sound might be bad.
A SUT with a winding ratio of 1:16 will give you a voltage step up of 16 times.
.5mv becomes 8mv.
.24mv becomes 3.84mv
With 1:32 .5mv becomes 18mv and .24mv becomes 7.68mv
(there's more to it than that but close enough)
If I were you I would use the 1:32 for the ZYX cartridge and see how it sounds and then go from there.

...as Woody Allen said of Marshall McCluhan in Annie Hall, and,
With Cinemag 3440-AH Into a 47k load with 36dB of gain phono stage, the higher gain 37.5 Ohm winding is best. The lower gain setting (I have a switch) I call the Columbia setting because it attenuates higher frequencies a good bit.
Beyond all that, the sensitivity of your amplification and speakers all factor in so, try everything!

Yes, there are other factors at work but simply stated; you will have to use the SUT in the high gain setting for the ZYX cartridge if you want to have the same gain as the Benz and the ZYX will be seeing only half the load impedance as the Benz was unless you change the value of the input resistor on your phono preamp.Tre'

All things being equal (which I'm not sure that they are), the ZYX cartridge signal is 6.4dB less than the Benz. A significant drop, so unless you increase the gain somewhere (SUT or phono), there will be a significant drop in volume.
Chip647 posted a chart that came from the BobsDevices website which I have linked below to give you more detail and context. I believe the internal impedance of the cartridge will also need to be taken into consideration per the chart, so you'll want to compare this spec in the ZYX vs the Benz.
Take a closer look at the BobsDevices CineMag 1131 (Blue) SUT With Switchable Gain. He makes additional comments in the description that might help. If you plan to buy one of his SUTs (which are Excellent, BTW!), Bob can help you choose.
I still have his basic CineMag (Red) SUT from when they were $395. He no longer sells this model. I also owned the CineMag 1131 (Blue) but sold it when I downsized my system and put away most of my vinyl.
You'll get better 'expert' help by posting your question in the Vinyl Asylum section.
You need to know the impedance of the cartridge as well.
You will be happiest most likely with a higher turns ratio, but make sure you are loading to cart correctly. The numbers in the very large graphic are turns ratios.
