I recently received the new Vanessa Fernandez album Use Me and gave it a quick listen on Saturday. Nothing special, nice but nothing to write home about. I was quite distracted waiting for my wife's biopsy to come back (negative by the way) and really couldn't enjoy the music. I listened to it again today and it is an incredible sounding album. It is filled with great music, wonderfully performed, and excellently recorded. My point is that the mood of the listener has a deep impact on the perception of the reproduction. A bad/negative mood can affect the way we hear what we hear and not for the better. Thoughts?

... so OF COURSE your state of mind and receptiveness is important.
Even to this end, all you are trying to do with high quality stereo is to "stack the deck" to get a peak experience more reliably and consistently.

As audiophiles, we take what's obsolete, make it beautiful, and keep it forever.
Hey! I have a blog now: http://mancave-stereo.blogspot.com or "like" us at https://www.facebook.com/mancave.stereo
I am glad to hear that the Biopsy came back negative-
My wife and I experienced a similar 'wait' for an amnio for our second child - he is now a healthy and hale teenager....
those are not pleasant times, and not much can reach you-
having said this, listening on the heals of the good news - can be quite euphoric-
Happy listening
No way, anything you hear should be weaved into fiction like the audio reviewers do. Any perceived or imagined tiny subjective difference should be attributed to something as obscure as you can make it with expressions that sway the innocent and engages their minds like "bloom", "inner detail", "liquidity", "blacker backgrounds" or the lack of any of the foregoing, etc.
The listener is neutral. The equipment has emotion.
The concept of "objective truth" not being important in politics as compared to perceptions is well known and is the keystone of the now dominant subjective school of audio.
I'm not sure even YOU know why you are still here. Or why you even have an audio system for that matter. Couldn't you take up a hobby that doesn't require you to make fun of it's core fellowship on a daily basis?

....there is no other excuse for 95% of all that's written on these boards. But that's true for the academic and scientific worlds as well.
And I would never join a club that would have me as a member. Do people join asylums willingly? Not usually. We come to them for the company and stay because of the pills.
I'm sure that you don't take infotainment reviews of 'high end' products seriously, do you? It's largely a sales and marketing effort.
'Objectivity' is nothing more than 'subjective agreement' anyway.
Think about the word 'subject'. It can mean something we study, or someONE we study, or it can mean a person who studies (as opposed to an object, which is just the thing studied.) Words can confuse even at the same time that they enlighten.
Come to think of it, try to find an objective definition for the difference between 'client' and 'server'. Or master and slave.
Both are necessary, and neither exist without the other. You can even try to be stupid without being intelligent. It doesn't work.
Cheers.

I find when Im stressed about something either a particular type of music can help me distract from the stress and I connect with it on a deeper level and other times music is least relevant at that time.
Moods do have an effect on music and music can have an effect on mood.

Try listening after Midnight- you will experience a profound difference!
the gorgeous sound I get with late night listening to improved, read less noisy, AC line conditions. I could of course be wrong, it could be that my mood is usually more mellow by then, interesting!

Mood determines the music that comes from my speakers.
Good to hear the biopsy was negative. Great relief for both of you.
...it's all in the brain of the listener. And I still think that, if you really, really like the music, the system becomes secondary.
Absolute agreement here! When shopping with my wife, many was the time she would catch me standing under a speaker in a random store listening to music... Found some interesting albums that way too (when I could identify the artist)!
Happy Listening!

" A bad/negative mood can affect the way we hear what we hear and not for the better."
The reverse is also true. How much music do you have in your collection
that you would not buy again because of your mood when you originally
bought it?
