well, its different now. it is red and says EMPIRE now. i have loved passing this sign and felt confident about my TEAC 4020GSL recorder.during the '94 earthquake it jumped off a low stand and landed on its top and had some cabinet damage on the front corners at the top. being it had never been serviced since i bought it new in about '72, and the tension arms weren't functioning, i took it there and for $125 they made it work perfectly but the cabinet is still a bit cracked.
DAM them for doing that to their sign. they are still there but i think they reduced in size and subdivided the space and ruined MY sign.
about a year before the change, i was driving by and had my daughter take this picture and it is my wallpaper on my smart phone. ahhhhh...nostalgia.

My Teac reel to reel purchased 1972 still works, although most Scotch 150 tapes do not. I have dozen or so Salzburg tapes taken fro WKCR lagte night live broadcasts that still sound impressive. Did not save them in time...including many performances of the Tatrai Quartet broadcasted from London, Budapest and Berlin
A real loss
They made good reel to reel machines and charged a third of what Tandberg did at the time
the one with the lever to operate the transport was waaaay more reliable than the newer electronically controlled transport.

They were magnificent reel to reel players..At the time I did not have the money. They were also elegant and beautiful. I still have their integrated amp!(1992). The magnificent tuner has gone out and cannot find anyone who can fix it, Teac was a second choice...
...a Tandberg 3016A power amp. It may be a boat anchor when it finally dies, but I certainly have no interest in replacing it until then.
Wow! I haven't driven by that area in awhile, but have been accustomed to being reminded where an electronic company with significant history is.
In other news, golf man along the 405 in Carson, has been transformed into big corporate Porsche Man. The golf course has been transformed into a test track for the company. Oh well, time marches on...
I remember when underneath it had referenced 'Magnetic...'
I thought that was a bummer!
Vbr,
Sam
If so, that's a bummer.
Over the decades, I drove past that sign all the time on my way to Norwalk Superior Court (uh, as an advocate, NOT as a criminal defendant, thankfully.) ;-)
I must say that the audiophile in me was always a little proud whenever I drove past that TEAC sign, having owned a nice little TEAC cassette player as a young audio enthusiast, and a small salute was usually accorded that venerable institution as a sign of esteem and respect (unlike the ubiquitous single finger 'salutes' I was so prone to freely extend to other, careless drivers who happened my way on those lovely morning freeway commutes.)
One of the very few signs along LA freeways that I ever actually liked to see.
Ah, but no more. Very sad.
(--sniff, sniff----)
i am so happy that i had my daughter snap that pic. the ONLY consolation is that the entity is still there for those of us that have the tape decks.
those with Esoteric and Tascam products can also rest easy that that company is still there for us.

That's what you get for living in CA. Let it be a lesson to you. :)
Vintage signs should automagically become national historic sites after, say, 5 years.
Ya know what I wanna see? I wanna see the original sign at 8500 Balboa Blvd.
:)
yeah, i hate it here, i miss Buffalo, NY. as IF! i am forced to go to all the record stores listed in recordcollectornews.com. and all the stereo stores too.
poor me.

Reminds me of the old AMPEX sign on 101 in Redwood city....
all that is left -
At least TEAC is still extant.
nope, nothin'...
all the best,
mrh
