This all stems from the sale of my Atma-Sphere amps last month on the AA Trader. Somehow, someone lifted the 6 digit UPS shipper number off my invoice from UPS and is using it to ship packages all over the U.S. Can't be a typo because of the number of times it has been used already, or can it? The only place I can find the shipper number is on my involve from UPS and I'm the only one who has access to the invoice. Glad I caught it early. The first thing the lady said to me when I called to complain was "oh oh" Not good.
Follow Ups:
Let this be yet another lesson to everyone not to ship with UPS. They are arrogant, inefficient, pricy, and not at all customer centered. I just received an amplifier from a dealer who ships UPS. I asked him, "Why." He claims he's never had a problem with UPS. Three days before my scheduled delivery date I requested UPS hold my package at their "Customer Service Center" (What a joke that is). The morning of arrival date the UPS web site read that my package was being held for pick up, then one line up it said my package was out on the truck for delivery. Typical UPS clusterfuck. It took numerous calls, and a bunch of time to clear this up. One call to Fed-Ex, and my packages are reliably detoured to a Fed-EX Kinkos store right in my neighborhood. They even phone me to let me know the package has arrived.
your post remains on the subject on losing or having things taken.
lucky one.

Here's what I was billed for. The tracking # works. I just tried it.
tracking # F0601486920
I live in Wisconsin, btw.
The fault of UPS? Or did someone lift my shipper number? My shipper number is not in that tracking number.
I'm just glad the amps made it to their destination safely.
Do you cancel your UPS account and re-open another? Does UPS hold you liable for charges or is that already fixed?
UPS cleared the charges but not before asking me if I knew someone at a rehab center in Atlanta, Georgia. What??????
UPS also told me those shipper numbers are only temporary and would automatically be cancelled. Not so sure I believe that.
Best solution is to use FEDEX.
I prefer FedEx too but none of them are perfect. Glad your issue appears to be resolved.
As far as liability for charges - UPS is pretty good at covering that. In my case, since I'm a UPS "Authorized Shipping Outlet," I've never opened a new account, but have had to dispute a few billed charges. Must say - it seems more than a bit naive of them (or us as shippers) to allow any possibly billable account info to show up in any given tracking number.
Is your outlet a "UPS Store"? I believe those are franchises and I've found shipping charges to vary, often more expensive versus going to an actual UPS facility. But they're convenient if you don't have an actual UPS facility nearby.
We had to suspend operations with UPS some years back on account (if you will pardon the expression) of this sort of thing going on all the time.
Whenever we ran into trouble, it would usually be some sort of small item shipped from one place I never heard of to another, not originating or arriving here at all. But it would be on the bill. We found, after an audit, that this was happening on average once every 5 weeks.
We calculated that on average, over a period of 6 months UPS had made off with about $200.00 and had been doing so for years. I did wonder at the time how many other accounts were getting duped in the same manner. So we suspended operations with UPS and went with Fed Ex, who has yet to make such a 'billing error'.
Since your shipment was entirely in the UPS system until it arrived, its unlikely that anyone outside the system was involved, though not impossible.
You're saying that UPS (the company) was ripping you off by shipping items on your account number? Were these fictional shipments that you were billed for? Or real shipments that ended up on your bill due to an error?
I've gotten 3 invoices from UPS since I shipped the amps. (I had the amps picked up so never went to a UPS store)
First invoice for the amps, second for a small item sent to Atlanta, and third another small item shipped to Ohio. Since I never went to any UPS sore and had the amps picked up at my front door, I think you're right on who the real culprit is.
And I definitely didn't ship anything to Atlanta or Ohio.
Sue, there's a thief working at your UPS location. It should be easy to find out who, since whoever is doing the fraudulent shipping is sending stuff FROM somewhere and TO somewhere.
Go after 'em, and push UPS to do the heavy lifting.
Dave
Do you do business with one UPS Store or independent outlet? Maybe someone at that store lifted your account information.
Good luck!
Hello Sue. Curious. Why selling the amps?
Why did I sell the amps? Good question. It sure didn't take long for seller's remorse to set in.
I guess I was trying to come up with some cash to buy more audio toys, like new speakers. Haven't had much time for shopping though. Too much drama on the home front these days.
Gotcha. Still a fan, and look forward to any future writing at Audio Beat.
...if you happen to come by in a month or so...32 ohm speakers coming that won't break the bank and will have pretty high SAF, too :-)

So much music, so little time!
.....including an MP-3 preamp just waiting to come out and play.
Can I take a guess on the speakers? Duke maybe? Nice guy.
Duke's new speaker, the Zephrin 46, debuted at THE Show Newport Beach in early June and described in detail here . I chose to make mine purty with some grilles (take 'em off for serious listening) and painted in this color:
A pair of spankin' new M-60s await :-)
C'mon down!

So much music, so little time!
Duke doesn't know Shiit from Shinola.
;)
Actually, I was thinking about Duke just yesterday. I had a thought about choking off the upper end of a driver, and wanted to get his input. But, he doesn't seem to have time for us townsfolk any more. And that's ok - I get it. I've left lesser people behind in my life as well.
:)
I met Duke online before he started selling speakers. Seemed like a real nice guy.
Since he started selling speakers, a few people have suggested I check them out as they might work well with my OTL amps. Haven't spoken to Duke in years, though.
Hey Sue, I was just jerkin' Duke's chain a little. He used to post more often, but lately he hasn't been around much.
He and I have never met, but from what he writes here, we agree on a large number of speaker design issues. I'd guess that they sound pretty good.
:)
UPS should be able to track down the person who stole your number, from either the return address or by tracing to the person receiving the goods.
Everything you ship has a UPS tracking number.
The first 6 characters after the "1Z" are your UPS shipper number.
Just sayin'...
The shipper number is contained within a much longer number, beginning 7 digits from the end. Not sure if this is the tracking number, but it can easily be seen through the window in the envelope.
How much easier can it get to ship a package and send the bill to someone else?
The 1Z- tracking number is not a Shipper Number.
The Shipper number is the ID for a credit account. That way a hi-volume shipper can pay a monthly bill instead of every time they walk in.
I own and run a UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet - in other words, basically one step down from a "UPS Store."
Anything shipped out of my facility will have my Shipper Number in big bold characters right after the 1Z in the tracking number.
Wanna charge a crapload of stuff on Dish Network's account? One of their many shipper numbers is 4929V*, another is X456*F. Amazon? 9648E*.
Want some more? LL Bean? Zappos? Ruger Arms?
I've replaced the last character in each of their shipper numbers on the odd chance you'd actually try to ship something with their accounts.
Simple fact is? IF you had any shipper number, you could probably walk into any UPS facility, fill out a handwritten Next Day Air sheet, and get something to its destination before whoever owns the shipper number you used would be billed for it.
Just went back and checked my shipping history for the last 90 days.
Sure enough there's the account number. I never noticed before.

Sue,
Sorry to hear that -
typically this is a difficult thing to do -
I have been involved with shipping/logistics for 20+ years, and - knock wood - have yet to have that happen w/ one of the corporate accounts that I have managed.
Alerting UPS is the best course of action - Good luck
The invoice sat on my desk until I paid the bill. Then I started getting billed for shipments I never made. I don't even have a dog anymore who could have stolen the number.
Good luck getting your money back from UPS too. Now's a good time to investigate different shipping options instead of the thieves at UPS.
