I have a large open living room, with very high ceilings. there is a loft overlooking this living room, making the space even larger. Additionally, I have hard wood floors. I have recently purchased a bose cinemate series. while this is very loud for music, it does not provide very much clarity for speaking during tv and movies. I do not want to install true surround sound speakers at this time, but I am looking for a low cost solution for improving my sound for TV and movie watching. I am looking for moderate loudness, with emphasis on clarity. What are my best options?

You need some DECENT left-center-right front speakers, and there are many brands that make substantially better speakers than Bose for less cost. Look into Paradigm, Polk, PSB, Wharfedale, etc. Check out recent cheap speaker reviews at the Sterophile website, to get a better idea what suits your needs and your budget. Keep the Bose for surround channels only.
One word, Klipsch.
