"T-Amp" refers to the fact that the amp uses a chip made by Tripath. It is a Class D design. You probably would not build one of the T-Amps from scratch but there are several inexpensive ones on the market.
Gainclone amps are not Class D. They are based on a family of amplifier chips made by National Semiconductor like the LM3886. Power output is around 30 to 60 watts depending on the power supply. There are kits available to build these Gainclone amps including the printed circuit boards. I believe the power supply needs to be somewhere in the 20v to 90v range (kits also available), making it not so suitable for a single 12v battery. You'll need to know how to solder if you want to build one of these amps from scratch.

Check out 41Hz from Europe for great DIY tripath kits. I've bought from them a few times and their reputation for great kits and resulting sounds is stellar.
They have both through hole and SMT designs (through hole is easier if you don't have great DIY skills and prefer bigger components). They have everything from PCBs, parts kits, smaller power and larger power designs and power supplies that run from batteries easily. I've built a few of them for myself and friends.
