I even see them in vending machines now ... how long do they last?
Been thinking about getting an IPAD ... but IPOD ... will probably never own one. I don't even own a cell phone. Maybe I live too close to Amish country. Is that contagious?

Those Amish make incredibly nice furniture! Wife and I have Amish made Dining Table and Chair set, Curio, Hutch, and AV Entertainment Center. Wouldn't you know it, they forgot to make holes in the back of the AV Entertainment Center for all the cord and cables that have to be routed. I was told that they have no concept of those things so our delivery person cut out all the holes for us. ;-)
Nice furniture, quilts, cheese, lunch meats, pies ... etc. We have about 20,000 Amish in my area. They posses many skill sets that have long since been forgotten. I live near Holmes County Ohio.

Enjoyed the YouTube video.
I'll have to ask where our Amish furniture is made. Our sales person told us once but I forgot. I know that each piece is made to order and we were able to pick our wood and stain. We were even able to make slight changes to the design like request different style legs for the table or have an extra extension leaf hinged on the under side. There's a store here near Denver that sells only Amish made furniture. I'm sure there are similar stores around the country. Thanks again!
Sure ... having grown up around the Amish ... I sometimes forget that people find them interesting. If you ever get the chance to eat at an Amish restaurant, give it a go ... they serve some really good homemade food.

Ditto. Never plan to own one either.
I finally broke down and bought my wife an iPad. She likes it and I will admit it's kinda cool. But for portable music I'll stick with my Cowon.
... A mobile phone is cheap and extremely convenient. It is hard to fathom why one would choose not to own one.
Both iPods and iPads are great. It depends on what you want one for and its intended use to know which best suits your purpose. Or, just have both :)

"It is hard to fathom why one would choose not to own one"It's hard for me to fathom why one would want to own one. That's what answering machines are for. If it's important ... I'll call back. In an emergency ... somebody already has a cell phone. If I need to be contacted 24/7 for a period of time ... I'll buy a pre-paid and get rid of it when I no longer need it.
iPod ... nice toy ... I have no need for one. When I was younger and more mobile ... I could have used it back then.
Ipad ... I like it ... free Wi-Fi makes it an attractive option to me. I can see the need for occasional access to the net when I'm away from home ... but not enough to justify a monthly bill.

... An answering machine doesn’t call me a car or order a take-away meal when I’m out at night.
I don’t think an iPod is a toy. YMMV
Obviously, each to their own :)

as usual you only want to hear yourself speak.
here's only a sampling of reasons for your head to consider and reflect on (excuse the new experience for you):
* they are bulky and fit uncomfortably in pants pocket
* they tie you into being 'on call' to anyone at anytime (bosses, too)
* you have to deal with shyster-type sellers who make claims that are typically untrue or play down the many steps required to set one up or use one
i won't go on as your mind is already reeling.
H.F.N.
Besides everything you mentioned:
* Personal phone conversations are private and should be conducted in the privacy of one's own home, not in public where it is rude to others.
* Business phone conversations are business and should be conducted only at the workplace when one is actually on the clock, not in public where it is rude to others.
* Driving while texting now KILLS more young people than drunk driving.
* For health and other reasons to avoid cell phones at all costs, see the links below.
I feel it is not only important to not own a cell phone but to not be near anyone using a cell phone. Someday I would like to retire somewhere where cell phones do not exist.

So you are saying people should not speak on a phone unless they are at home? Can two people have a private conversation in the park or do they need to retreat to the privacy of their home before they can have a conversation? Slippery slope dear.
* Business phone conversations are business and should be conducted only at the workplace when one is actually on the clock, not in public where it is rude to others.
I guess you have never heard of a business lunch? Are they rude to others?
Also, in your view two or three people having a business conversation in the park is rude?
If you don’t wish to own a mobile phone that is your business and I couldn’t care less but if you are intimating folks who own mobile phones are rude for owning them then I think you are nuts!
I think your views are extreme.

"So you are saying people should not speak on a phone unless they are at home? Can two people have a private conversation in the park or do they need to retreat to the privacy of their home before they can have a conversation? Slippery slope dear."Yes that is exactly what I am saying, when someone starts speaking on a cell phone everyone looks to see if they are talking to them. Someone talking on a cell phone is no different than someone loudly talking to themselves, it is not normal behavior to engage in public. The height of rudeness is to talk to this "invisible" person while waiting in line or worse while pretending to listen to a real live person while taking on a cell phone!
On the other hand two people talking in real life are usually looking at each other and other people in the vicinity can tell they are engaging in conversation, this is totally normal behavior.
"I guess you have never heard of a business lunch? Are they rude to others?"
No, because these are real people eating lunch there is and should be no cell phone involved just real people eating and talking. However I think it is exploitation of white collar workers to have to work during lunch as that is supposed to be their free time.
"Also, in your view two or three people having a business conversation in the park is rude?"
No because these are people actually talking face to face to one an another, other people can clearly see what is going on. However if their time is not paid by the companies they work for once again it is exploitation.
"If you don't wish to own a mobile phone that is your business and I couldn't care less but if you are intimating folks who own mobile phones are rude for owning them then I think you are nuts!"
I will never own a cell phone because I know the truth about them and how evil they are, that is why I created the anti-cellphone forum. Not only are cell phone users rude but so are the commercials that recruit them. I'm sure you seen the commercial where a couple is out for dinner, while the guy watches a game on his phone while pretending to listen to his date. Can't get much ruder than that. I advocate a ban on all cellphones and the taking down of all cell site towers.
"I think your views are extreme."
I believe my views are normal, and I feel sorry for people who got tricked into owning cell phones. However some people are born rude and if they didn't own cell phones they might find other ways to be rude. There is no non-rude way to use a cell phone in public IMHO.

Teresa."

... I will make some points then leave you to have the last word.
I am not doubting what you say or what happens where you live but I will make some points about my own mobile phone usage.
• If I take or make a business or private call on my mobile phone whilst outside my home it will not be in earshot of folks not involved in the conversation. Can you understand this or not?
• Yes, folks talking loudly in a queue are rude with or without a mobile phone.
• Stating it is not normal behaviour to use a mobile phone outside one’s home is complete BS.
• I have many business lunches and your hysterics about exploitation is nonsense and utter BS. I am not a white collar worker and it is extremely rare for me to lunch with one, though they often try to weasel in on the action :)
• LOL I have no idea about a commercial of a guy watching his mobile phone while on a date. (your country dear, not mine)
• I never watch TV on my phone.
• I meet my wife for lunch and dinner regularly and we talk to each other without distraction from our phones.
• Lately I have had several business meetings at a waterside park with three or four others and we talk to each other whilst all having a conference call with several others on our phones. (No doubt you will object to this as well?)
Of course you are normal.
I am happy to different from you :)
The floor is yours, have fun.

...Re-education is something many can learn from. (even you & me)• * they are bulky and fit uncomfortably in pants pocket
Wow, are they? I have never put a mobile phone in my pants pocket so it isn’t a problem for me. However, obviously it is a problem for you. Also, my phone is about one third the size of my wallet and about one tenth the size of my folio bag. Gosh, life is tough, how does one cope.
• * they tie you into being 'on call' to anyone at anytime (bosses, too)LOL I guess if you are a lemming they might. I am not tied into being on call for anyone at any time. I only answer my mobile phone or home phone when I want to and if it is a caller I wish to speak to. I guess that is a bit too complex for you to comprehend eh? bosses, too LOL, gosh!!! Wow, really? :)
• * you have to deal with shyster-type sellers who make claims that are typically untrue or play down the many steps required to set one up or use one
Again, I guess it depends if one has the ability to tie one’s own shoe laces. I have had mobile phones for my wife and I for over twenty years. They are cheaper than they have ever been and of course a retailer needs to set the phone up correctly before one even walks out of the shop. Gosh!!! It is so difficult.
I value my time and convenience and a mobile phone is invaluable to that end for me.
If you or anyone else lives a lifestyle where a mobile phone is not required then good for you.
I am happy to own and use mobile phones. Gosh, I must be so unusual.
You are an amusing little fellow, thanks for the laugh :)

I understand Teresa's use of the term "phone slave." The biggest complaint I've heard from cell phone users, apart from the cost, is the expectation on the part of others that the main reason to have a cell phone is so that other people can get ahold of you whenever they want. Whether it's parents concerned about their children or children worried about their aging parents, not answering the cell phone seems to cause distress to others. "Slave" is maybe too strong a term, since it's self-imposed, but it's rare for me to be out with someone who owns a cell phone who isn't repeatedly checking to see who's calling, and sometimes muttering, "D___, I guess I better see what they want."
I think convenience depends on what one is used to and what one's needs are. I've never had even a cordless phone, so I don't think of a phone sitting on the desk at home and attached to the wall as inconvenient. I upgraded to a touch-tone phone some years ago so I could navigate the automated menu systems of many businesses, but I've never felt a need for a phone that could store telephone numbers, operate from a loudspeaker, or display who happens to be calling.
Unlike Teresa, I don't mind answering the phone, and I kind of like not knowing who's on the other end. This may let you know how unexciting my life is, but it's always a bit of a thrill to pick up the receiver, say "hello," and listen to find out what surprise is in store for me. But just because I find something to be a pleasant diversion at home, does not mean it's something I want with me constantly. Both music listening and telephone conversations are things I enjoy at home, not things I want to experience when I'm out and about engaged in other activities. I don't even listen to music in the car, preferring talk radio or perhaps old-time radio shows (Sherlock Holmes, Nero Wolfe, The Fat Man, etc.) on CD's.
... I don’t think I know any friends or acquaintances who don’t own a mobile phone. Go figure :)
There can be six to ten of us at a restaurant and I don’t recall noticing everyone constantly checking their phone or the phones even ringing.
Yes, some people in a restaurant are uncouth and ignorant and take & make calls whilst seated in a restaurant.
I don’t get stressed if my wife or kids or elderly parents don’t answer their mobile phone.
I find a mobile phone very convenient and cheap.
At home we have six cordless phones and about the same number or corded phones. I like to walk around and pace when I’m talking business which is impossible to do with a corded phone.
My wife likes to sit by the pool and talk on the phone.
Is a cordless or mobile phone essential? I guess it depends on how much one values their convenience.
It's all good :)

... A mobile phone is cheap and extremely convenient. It is hard to fathom why one would choose not to own one.OK I will enlighten you. I don't own a cell phone either and I refuse to be a phone slave anywhere, at anytime. At home I let my answering machine answer and only talk on the phone when I absolutely have to. I would never under any circumstances carry a phone around with me, that would be pure hell in my book!
Also I have switched back to a corded phone at home due to radiation from the base of cordless phones. But that is nothing compared to the health hazards of cell phones.
I cannot believe people carry those cell phones around with them and then on top of it pay a high monthly fee. It is just not logical to me!

Teresa,
I own a phone and have for years. The first one kept going until there were no more analog towers. The second one is basic Motorola. It cost $40. I pay $100 for 1000 minutes. I've never used those 1000 minutes in any given year. They rollover the excess if you renew ahead of time. This year I started out with 1400 minutes. You can't find a pay phone anymore when you are out and about. Who ever is leaving home for the longest or farthest takes the phone. $10 a month for the ability to make a call when you are away from home doesn't seem excessive.
cell phone zombie , as that is more properly descriptive, in my opinion.
.
I'm ol' school also when it comes to phones. I leave it behind when I leave my car to shop, dine, movies, shows, library, etc. But the folks who still only use landlines make me feel like a Jetson!;)
One can only be a phone slave if one chooses to be or needs to be for work.
I always carry my phone but I do so for my convenience, not the convenience of others. (Does this make me a phone slave?)
When I don’t wish to be disturbed it is set to silent. I don’t answer my phone if I don’t know who the caller is. (I do the same on my home phone and many calls just go straight to message bank)
I have corded and cordless phones at home.
Phones are cheap and it is illogical to me for one not to have one unless one is so poor they can’t afford one.
My parents are in their eighties and both have a mobile phone. They carry them around but the phone is switched off. They only switch them on if they wish to make a call. After they make a call they switch the phone back off. (I guess they are phone slaves too eh)
I value my time & find my phone to be extremely convenient.
YMMV

My sister's is a 1st generation and it still works. In addition to the Classic 160 I got last year, I've got a 1st gen Shuffle that's six years old and still works perfectly despite having sat in a desk drawer uncharged for nearly 5 years.
A co-worker has an 80 GB model that looks like it was run over by a bus, yet still works just fine.
But...as you say, you've been thinking iPad, and you've got plenty of company. iPod sales have been falling off for several years as tablet computers and smart phones can do what iPods do and more.
I'd love to have an iPhone 4s but I'll be damned if I'll pay for a data plan. The iPhone can access the web anywhere there's wireless which is nearly everywhere I go, yet the telecoms require that you buy their data plans. Shouldn't be legal.

Never could stand recurring bills ... the IPAD as understand it ... just piggyback's off of Wi-Fi ... like at Starbucks or McDonald's. So after the initial purchase of the hardware ... it should not cost anything to use it in public (away from home). At home ... I would have to buy a wireless router.
I have browsed Apple stores before ... was really impressed at how easy the IPOD, IPAD and desktop computers were to operate. Didn't have any problems navigating the software. Apples products are dead easy to use ... appear to be really well designed.

Right--you can get an iPad that is capable of using 4G cell phone service but you don't have to, and you don't have to buy a data plan in addition to a voice plan, etc.
The iPad is a beauty. My sister has one...better than a laptop.
