Been trying to resolve an issue regarding a speaker that Fedex sent to the wrong address in the wrong country to the wrong person 2 months ago! When the speaker was finally delivery, it was damaged! Fedex employees just flat out don't care. They are too big and it is never anyone's job, responsibility or that they have the authorization. I have have been in contact with over 10 employees and still they must send my claim to another department! Avoid Fedex unless your package gets the perfect, lucky, trip.... And if you do use Fedex because they are the biggest and have the most advertising and you go thru what I am going thru that is your own fault because you have been warned!!!!
Follow Ups:
Over the past 4 years I've probably shipped 200+ items via Fedex Ground and I've never had a problem of any kind. Obviously therefore I have not had to deal with the type of problem you're having. My wife works in an office where they use Fedex overnight thousands of times a year with rarely a problem. When they do apparently the customer service is great. Of course, that's a sizable commercial account with some clout. But all in all I'd have to say that Fedex does a great job in spit of your unfortunate experience.
I was waiting for a visa to be delivered for some work I had to do in Africa. I called the day before and gave them EXACT directions to my house and a description (6 foot chain link fence...guy sitting on the porch waiting for visa). They not only didn't deliver but the tracking error stated no one was home. I had to drive 120 miles outa my way the day I was supposed to be flying to Africa to pick it up from the fed ex terminal.
The LAST time I had dealings with FedEx I had ordered two hard drives. I found them behind the back tire of my truck.
It is time someone initiated a class action suit against the company and started making the employees liable for criminal penalties under federal law. They been getting away with crap for FAR too long.
Yep Had much trouble with FEDEX. Too many packages they handle.
I jsut shipped 2 F agile mono block tube amps By DHL, got there undamaged all 3 boxes are there at once, and 1-2 days faster then fedex/ups not to mention 20% cheaper with better Insurance coverage.
Do yourself a favor try dhl.
It is up to you to pack your item so that it is impossible to destroy. I've used every major carrier and have never had an issue ...then again, my packing is way overboard. I'm sure my luck will run out eventually, but I'm doing everything possible to prevent it.

It really is true Fedex employees do not care. Of all the shipping and receiving, I've had the most significant damages with Fedex. Most recently, Fedex picked up an item under claim for mandatory "inspection," and the item was returned with NEW, even bigger damages!! Their response was pretty much, (paraphrase)"Go away and use another shipping company."
I've had much better success with UPS in all facets (on time delivery, package handling, customer service, claims, etc.). Fedex Express provides a fine service, but the subcontracted Fedex Ground is very hit and miss IME. UPS is logistically a far more integrated and streamlined operation.I won't ship anything expensive via USPS because I've found their claims process more difficult and their large/heavy package handling mediocre. Their totally useless "tracking" system is also a big no-no for me.
I use USPS first, then Fedex and as a last resort, UPS. DHL isn't in the mix. The only issues I've had were with UPS.
I did ultimately resolve a very expensive FedEx damage claim, but as has been your experience, it requires getting to someone at FedEx who has authority. I just kept asking to speak to their supervisor and when I got to her, she was helpful.I recently had a FedEx claim where a cd player had its transport torn off the top mounting. Ultimately the local office paid to return it and the damage was minor.
Overseas, I have had good luck with UPS although I would never use them domestically.
At FedEx, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, and no one wants responsibility. The problem is doubled when FedEx Trade Networks is added to the mix.

I've shipped and received hundreds of items (probably 500 or more) using Fedex, UPS, USPS, and a few others from time to time.Out of all those times, I've had shipping damage six times, one lost item, and one temporarily lost item.
To be fair, all but one of these would have been prevented by good packing - one of the lost items was due to the shipping label being separated from the package. Also to be fair, I've received scores of packages with inadequate packing that made the trip okay.
A big problem in all the person-to-person commerce (through things like ebay, audiogon, etc.) is that, in my experience, most people don't know how or don't care to pack properly, using enough of the right material for the job.
Now, as for claims processing, all of them put the claimant through an inordinately lengthy and painful process - for that I am quite willing to criticize them.
I'm sorry for your experience. It is surely frustrating and I would be none too pleased if it hasppened to me.
I have been lucky because I have shipped at least fifty items via FedEx Ground without a hitch since 2000. I double box anything over 15 pounds. When for some reason I cannot double box, I float the item inside the box with a ten inch or so "crush zone" on all sides. I fill the crush zone with crumpled up, baseball sized newspaper. I use tape completely around the box in every direction. Taping the top and bottom seems is not enough.
It sounds like your box was the original one. I think it was just handled too many times.
Was this Fedex ground?
but I am sure all shippers have had their mishaps. When I have a choice, I use FedEx and am yet to experience any problems.Sorry to hear about your speakers. I hope it gets resolved quickly.
FedEx has been very good to me and my company these past seven years that I have used them. FedEx also gives me better rates and delivery times than UPS. Now UPS on the other hand.....
