.....with new pictures (a little grainy but not too bad). the damn room is actually finished completely. click on the 'R' next to my name.....then click on 'new room and music system'.i did leave all the construction pictures and a few pictures of my old room on the 'picture gallery' page.
i've had 25 or 30 visitors so far.....most seem to like it.

yes, you are invited.....in the last 2 weeks i have had a steady stream of judges through the room.difficult to judge systems in different rooms. my room would be a big advantage to any gear. so far, i'm not a big fan of horn based systems.....but the 'Kloss' system might change my mind.
if we are considering the 'Kloss' room and gear compared to my room and gear........who knows? i have my biases.
if you look at the Kloss room above.....it is clear he would have some serious reflection problems off all the flat hard surfaces. it would do many things well.....but would somewhat fall apart when things get cooking (compared to my room or other's designed properly).
this is not to say that the Kloss room and system don't sound terrific.....just that the laws of physics would limit the perfomance of the Kloss room.
For God's sake man, change the color of the carpet, and the chair.Get a copy of "Color Palettes" by Susan Butterfield and study it. You will not see your room in the same way after that.

.....a**h*les.....everyone has one.the visitors to my room all overwhelmingly comment on the excellent aesthetics. i agree that the pictures show a room that is somewhat monochrome. i have added some persian rugs, and will also add some art and plants as time (and budget) permits.
i have a home that is Craftsman style with lots of different color woods, a 26 foot river rock fireplace, and mountain views out of every window. as the house is very cozy and warm feeling.....my listening room can be single purpose.
you posted the same comments on the last thread and i ignored them.....but clearly you desire a response.
if you are ever in Seattle i would enjoy it (honestly) if you could visit and give your honest opinion of how it looks in person.

My response this time around was rather more focused than my initial comments on the aesthetics of your room.I have truly appreciated the posts of your's that I have encountered in the Asylum. It is apparent that you are a thoughtful and tactful individual. It is because of my appreciation of you that (while it may not seem like it) I have attempted to offer you constructive criticism.
Color sense can be honed as finely as listening skills. I have no reason to doubt that in the latter you can run circles around me. It is with the same degree of confidence that I reckon that I have spent much more time and passion looking, and thinking, about color and texture than you have.
I am glad that you have put some color into the room with some "persian" rugs. I do hope that this does not include the green thing you had in your prior listening room. There are excellent rug dealers in Seattle, so you really have no excuse to not have something much (much) more beautiful and authentic.
Anyway... I will not volunteer you any further thoughts on this matter- unless you do have a specific question that I might address.

BTW, how does LA Woman sound in that room in vinyl ? I'm sure it is a lot different than when I listened to it as a 'kid' on my 8-track tape.
i NEVER use the laptop without 'tunes' playing.....but i am behind in my 'serious' listening.'L.A. Woman' sounds great.....'Riders in the Storm' is outta this world.
......depending what (or who) you were doing when you were listening to the 8-track of L.A. Woman the overall experience may have been better......
some of my best musical moments were very lofi....but had other redeeming qualities.

.....as far as horns are concerned......i've yet to be 'moved' by a horn based system. either they have limited bandwidth, some degree of honkyness, or considerable incoherence in the bass.i do enjoy the immediacey and microdynamics......but there also seems to be a lack of 'weight' and 'body'.
in any case, i'm more aware of a speaker signature with horns than the best dynamic speaker systems i have heard.
i'm sure horn lovers have their own dynamic speaker 'bitch' list too.
I really like horns, trumpet being my favorite. Tenor sax ain't so bad either. Heck, what would Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Tower of power be without horns? Limited bandwidth? Are you SIRIUS? I've got to agree, but a speaker must not be made to sound like anything in particular. If it does, everything sounds at least a little like it, such as a horn.

and with the commitment i just made i'll be working a few more years than i might have otherwise.....i'm not complaining.....it is all about choice.....and i'm happy with the choice i made.

3. Once bid reaches 250,000 (let`s not be greedy) - sell

Do you have figures? I'm curious how flat one can get bass in an "ideal" room (without mucking around with the signal).
no room is flat. unless a room has more than a 30 degree flair there will always be some sort of bump and some sort of suckout at the listening position. and with a 30+ degree flair there would all kinds of other negative issues.unfortunately, on the long center axis there will always be a null point and a reinforcement point. since for soundstageing purposes that long axis is where you want the listening position, it then becomes a matter of degrees of null and reinforcement. the best designed rooms have the least problems here.
in my case i have a mild 'bump' at 134hz and a mild 'hole' at 80hz (both 4db to 5db). there are bandaids for the bump (heimholtz resonator) and possible solutions for the 'hole'. after living with the room for a few weeks it is not likely i will pursue any corrective action. this measured 'non-linearity' is so minor that i almost never perceive it. and it is debatable that solving these issues would actually result in better sound.
BTW, Rives said that above 134hz my room was the flatest they had ever measured......for whatever that is worth......and the tonal balance pretty much holds where ever you are in the room.

I wasn't aware that above 200Hz was really an issue. I get 77-80dB for 250-2kHz in my untreated room.

I used a Radio Shack Digital SPL meter at my head position and the Stereophile Test CD with frequency tones (I can't remember which disc). I was aiming for 78dB so -1, +2 seemed pretty good. Below 100Hz it's a different story ...

To get the true readings you need sweept sine, analyzed with something with precision. I´d guess you have much worse peaks and dips than your current measurement shows. That´s why I was so surprised.An untreatened room typically have variations like +/-5dB (best case) to +/-10dB. In the bass something like +/-15dB or something like that.
-1 +2dB would be good for many speakers, add the room ontop of that and we´re talking rollercoaster unless some serious room treatment are in place,

thanks.i must admit i chose the Zoethecus racks mostly due to my wife's opinion of their beauty......we both love the look of light maple. they are a pretty good sounding rack but not the SOTA. i need to do a good amount of tweaking with the Zoethecus racks to optimize performance.
i have my eye on the Grand Prix or Silent Running racks. for now, the budget is shot to even consider any upgrades.
my chair is a 'zero gravity' chair from the 'relax the back store'. it is, by far, the most comfortable chair i have ever sat in.....and it's high back has minimal effect on the system performance.

I hate it. Yes that's right, I HATE IT!!!! Well, that is what I have to keep telling myself. You see, if I HAD that room, I would lose my job, my wife would divorce me and I would gain 300 pounds - Why? CUZ I'D NEVER LEAVE THE DAMN ROOM! Heck, as long as you have that conduit to hold the cables, where's the I.V. and bedpan so you don't have to interrupt a session for such menial tasks as eating and relieving yourself??Can you spell e-n-v-i-o-u-s? I hope to get to stop by someday to hear what kind of sound is really possible from such great gear when the room is optimized as well.

BUT, to add insult to injury, Mikey has the Sirius III, and for that, the level to which I can detest him leaves you and your Sirius II in the dust!!Then again, if either one of you want to donate your Rockport to the ever popular "Frank Peraino Stereo Foundation for the Systematically and Listening Room Challenged" which by the way is a tax deductible 501(C)3) organization (of which I am the founding, charter and sole member), then I will repent of my sin of covetousness (on second thought, I will need both Rockports, the II to sell to get a down payment on my new room, and the III to listen to).

When I imagine someone who "works in retail", I usually think of a pimply faced 18 year old selling cellphones in Best Buy. I guess I never knew that kid had a sweet audiophile system. Just kidding anyway... It is an awesome room. The kind of dream room that almost everyone here would envy.Also, a note: Maybe you should have asked to have the carpet extend under the speakers, so you wouldnt need to place them on those little rugs.
the most recent pictures (on the system page) show no carpet under the speakers.....i was experimenting with positioning and also moving the speakers around in the final stages of construction; the carpet pieces allowed me to move the 565 pound speakers by myself.when i removed the carpet pieces i did get more transient snap and tighter bass. the hardwood retains more acoustical energy and is a design aspect of the room. the idea is to have hardwood under and behind the speakers.....then carpet forward for first reflection control.

Your room is a sonic and visual masterpiece! Not only is the sound outstanding, but the room is beautifully designed and has a very nice ambience to it and by far and away the best soundstaging I have heard. Congratulations on the achievement of a lifetime! It's a long way from the days of Watt puppies and Levinson electronics. Now if only we could deal with that polarity thing ;))

i do plan on taking another run at 'getting' the 'absolute phase' thing. in the past i could never get beyond the musical enjoyment to 'focus' on it.....but in this room it seems easier to pick up on.
i am looking forward to hearing your 'new' room once the construction is done.......i know the frustrations you are going thru.

Beautiful work! I see your ceiling diffusers but what I was wondering is the corners behind your loudspeakers. I see you have nice wall treatment but what about those coners? If you stand back there..I bet the bottom end is way up. Any thoughts to trapping that area? Are the corners "open" to provide more bottom reinforcement purposely?Just curious how the sound back there is being trapped or diffused.

thanks.those fabric corners are actually a false wall. the wall is 1" fibreglass behind which is a baffle space 18" deep, then the actual room wall covered in 2" fibreglass. this bass baffle extends up behind the ceiling soffit. all the ceiling soffits are bass traps. so, in essence, there is no corner. the whole front wall and ceiling is one large bass trap.

in the last few weeks i have had as many as 10 listeners seated at a time......with plenty of space for more. the room balance is such that all the seating positions hear pretty good sound. i love to 'share the wealth'.......one reason the room is fairly large is my preference for having fellow music lovers over for frequent listening sessions.when i am by myself i do optimize things and eliminate clutter....but many chairs are right outside.
nothing to be gained here ...
