I shall start by saying my wife had a large influence in my purchases, especially speakers( Not in MY living room etc.)Years have passed and now I have complete freedom as she has given up.

None at all - just kidding. My wife has had a huge impact. Out went the maggies as soon as we moved into the new house. Had tukans for 10 years, ok but poorly placed and not real music. Finally got the ok for new system but looks important. Thought I wanted avant gardes but that was a definite no (she liked the looks but not to our decor). Have finally gone with piega - looks well liked. As it turns out she probably helped since I'm not sure I would have stayed with horns for that long. Her points have for the most part been valid and she is learning
My first speaker purchase after married was decided by her. I was willing to buy some small box speakers but she insisted the Magnepan MG1's sounded better. Good girl. 3 different pairs and vintages of Maggies latter, I've gone back to the box, Aerials, as I wanted 5.1ch HT capability and could not make the Maggies work in the HT room. There have come and gone many many components and she rarely notices or if she does I can dismiss any concern with "A box comes in and a box goes out." That seems to work. Having said all that, I added small rear speakers with no notice. I added a big Vandy sub and no notice for a long time and then she just asked me what it did. But I am scared to put full size floor standers in the rears that match my fronts for some reason, even though we have been married and have had separate checking accounts for 20 years.
ME: I want 7 foot tall speakers in the living room.

...for the upgrade from Dynaudio Contour 3.3 to Dynaudio Confidence 5 although she liked the look of the Contour better.
But she liked the *sound* of the Confidence better.Hope she doesn't listen to some dCS/Jeff Rowland combo anytime soon!
I have changed to active speakers which is equivalent to a reduction in size by a factor 2-3. My wife is happy that they are smaller than the previous speakers so she did not object. Since she has her own income and I pay all audio gear from my own wallet, I never ever discuss prices with her. She likes listening to music but doesn't give a damn to what gear is producing it. Since I further have assembled my ultimate system there won't be any discussions (about speaker size) any more.Klaus

My wife has plenty of influence. She is a competent musician with good ears, so she can hear differences as much as I can. I value her opinion. Our primary constraints are budgetary, and I will say that I tend to push farther in that regard than she does - but I push farther with *all* of our expenditures, so that's no difference. She's just more of a saver than I am. But aesthetically, she cares far more about the sound than she does about the looks.My wife is a good-looking woman, but prefers substance over form - which is just another way of saying that I'm ugly, so my speakers can be, too!

she always comes to the same conclusion as I do about the sound of a component, only she does it much faster. She can pick out differences between components very quickly. And mind you she does not read any reviews, so she has no preconceptions about what a component "should" sound like.Of course I always want to spend more on the stereo than she does, but she is pretty understanding.
She played a big role in picking the Meadowlark Kestral Hot Rods that we own. I am glad she did, as they have been nothing but a pleasure for 3 years.

If it is in the family room, then she has final say. EX- last year I was asked if it were possible to reduce the clutter around our TV.Translation, she wanted to see fewer components out in the open. So I had tacit approval to buy something new. I did, A Marantz progressive scan DVD changer- to replace our Laser Disk player, DVD player and CD changer. 1 component in place of 3....
I also have a dedicated listening room, where she has no influence on equipment purchases.
I do have to add that way back when, I set up a seperate bank account to fund my hobby. She had noticed the accumulation of equipment and asked how much I had spent. Thanks to Quicken I was able to tell her. She then asked if I had considered selling anything that I was not useing. So began my stereo account.

Not much really. I've tried to please her for years, listening to her aesthetic qualifications. However, they changed all the time. After 20 years of marriage, I've finally figured out that you cannot please a woman, so I stopped trying. She even dislikes my Vienna Acoustics Strauss in the Rosewood finish. She says everything I buy is 'ugly'. So I just turn the volume up, so I don't hear her anymore. I buy what I want, because I KNOW she won't like it anyway.

Absolutely none anymore - got divorced last year. Now I have a dedicated 2 channel room, a dedicated HT room, and complete freedom to do what ever the hell I want. I don't even want to admit the system I set up for her in her new house - (which I paid for) the only comment I got after finishing was "it's so stupid there is just not "one" button to push! Geeezzz! Marriage - a money pit kinda like a sailboat - been there - done that! YMMV as always.

I asked my wife if she could hear the difference between just the TV speakers upstairs and my main system. She was watching the A-Team upstairs, then she came downstairs to watch it with me. She said that she could not hear a difference. I am assuming that she is just trying to be a sweet wife with no interest in my toys, but she really claimed to not hear a difference. She can sing well so she is not tone deaf. She is not a musician, but she married one. Is this normal? Is this possible?Upstairs: 25 inch RCA TV
Downstairs: 32 inch JVC TV, Hales Revelation 3 speakers, Rogue M-120 mono amps, BAT VK-3i preamp, Legacy Audio Thumper subwoofer, all Harmonic Tech Truthlink interconnects, Harm. Tech Pro 9 spkr cbls, JoLida 302a as rear speaker amp, Klipsch Reference Bookshelf 3 rear speakers running as a soft quad stereo compliment to the front channel.
My wife heard the difference between the Svetlanas and The Mullard EL34 in my Dynaco St-70 without even being asked. She came in the room and said "what did you do? The vocals seem more liquid." I had just installed a new used quad of XF2.I about fell out of the chair!

My 10 year old daughter can hear differences. I was comparing a couple of CD players when my daughter wandered down and asked what I was doing. She thought that was kind of interesting (for some reason) and sat down and listened. After one comparison she stood up and said, "The silver one is better." and went off to ride her bike. She was right too. So on her advice I purchased the Arcam FMJ.
HowdyBoth of my daughters hear most of the differences in the system and have better hearing than I do. (I'm not saying that the always care about them :)
I often give them a remote to A/B changes (or whatever) and they articulate the same differences I hear. It a good double check that I'm not fooling myself.

She usually does hear a difference, even with just passive listening from another room. So if there's an improvement in the way the rig sounds I tend to get the wifely blessing. If it's a placebo to her then I get more grief (though I also tend to get the piece of gear too unless it's a placebo to me as well...).Once when I was looking to upgrade the speakers I happened to bring home a pair that really didn't work well in the system.....it nearly drove her nuts and SHE actually said we needed new speakers....I wish that happened more often.

...but she won't admit it. Still, I make sure she auditions any changes to the system. If she says it sounds better then I can't be fooling myself.And it's very gratifying to hear her tell guests things like "I can't imagine what could possibly be improved, and then he changes a wire and it IS better!"
Lucky me.
She has a spending veto, though. ( Just as well. )

In my case, that means the speakers must be small boxes - either monitors or floorstanders that are about 40" x 8/9"w x 8-13"d. That's the compromise. (Proac, Dynaudio, Joseph, Merlins?, etc.) There's plenty to choose from. Just can't get things like AP Virgos or Avantis, Quad, Martin Logan, Wilson, Thiel, etc.
Also, speaker cables absolutely cannot look like "snakes in my living room!!" So, adios to Bob Crump's fantastic TG Audio HSR cables. My current Cardas Golden Ref are now under review as we are moving into a new house.
Oh, well. Pick and choose the battles and this one is fine the way it is.
Then she couldn't care less. Unfortunately, I have to pay, turn them on and have them visible. Too bad.
I am only married 1.5 years now so her % is still high...It has to "look" good for "her" living room as I do not have any more space...

Interesting times
She isn't bothered by what I do in my room. Even before we got the house and were in our condo with only one room for all purposes she didn't care about me buying 6' tall speakers (Maggie's) in a 13 x 16' living room. Now that I have my own room she doesn't care at all.
She have notting to say it's my decision except for the loudspeaker: i choose the drivers make some computation, tell her what i request and she design it. she cannot say they are ugly or that they use to much space, it's her design hehehe
