Hello all, interesting site:
Here's my question: I'm a college student with limited funds. I'm looking for an amplifier for some medium-sensitivity speakers (86dB Paradigms Studio 60's) that's smooth, and will let me take the volume up occasionally. I have run out of power with my 65watt/channel Harmon Kardon reciever (it was a start....), so I'm looking to raise the wattage figure, and more importantly, the quality. Price limit? About $1000, but I'd really stretching to spend that much.
I'm looking at the Acurus A100 and the A200 primarily, because of a local dealer (the only local dealer, actually). Other brands I've looked at: Rotel, NAD, Adcom (sheesh, amazing how many bad reviews Adcom generates!). I'd love to get Classe, but it's out of my price range.
Thanks to all who respond, I appreciate your time.
Happy Listening,
Wheel
I lived with the Acurus A250 and L10 for the past seven years, right up until last week. I agree, the amp is a tad bright. And it's a bit lean in the low end, perhaps because it is relatively low current for a high-watt amp (250 into 8, 350 into 4). For the price, though, I thought it was outstanding, and I'll hold on to it for a secondary system now that I've upgraded.

no text. none. not even a little bit. that's why I wrote (nt)
You might check out some used amps.. you can get more quality for less.
The Acurus is a good amp but on the bright side. You might check out the ATI amp. They have a 2-channel version for around $800.. Nice sound and will handle difficult loads with ease..

When I was in the market for a new amp, I ended up taking home an Accurus stereo 100 wpc amp and a Rotel 981. I compared the two and in my opinion the Rotel was just slightly less grainy and therefore I took the Accurus back.
I have the Acurus A125X5 and I haven't heard anything better for the price, very smooth, doesn't get hot in the loudest of circumstances and the build quality is great. Just my opinion.
Unfortunately I can't add much on your choices, but I can recommend the Belles 150A as an amp I'm quite happy with. Pretty nuetral so it could be bright or grainy depending on what's upstream. It'd be slightly over your buget at $1,195 but close with a 10% discount or less used. Also a McCormack DNA .5 might be attainable used in your price range.
Lots of folks do like Rotel as well but I have no experience.
I'm not a bid fan of Acurus. I find them a bit bright myself. I think rotel may be better, but that *can* also sound bright and a tad grainy. IMO the smoothest in the list(as a general rule) would be NAD. While NAD doesn't really do anything special, it doesn't do anything really bad either.

I know the older Acurus was bright, which model year were you referring to? The recent ones were supposed to be smoother... I think I'd prefer a bit of brightness to grain, if I had to have one...
NAD... seems like a good choice, but I'm quite scared about reliability issues!

You may be right-I haven't heard the newest Acurus. I've heard that NAD has gotten better about build quality tho.

Very nice amps, good design. $595 for a 125 watt 1000A and $995 for a 205 watt 1500A. very detailed good bass. You can get better sound but very good for the money. Also ATI 1502 150 watt for $795 I think. Mark
