It seems like Hi-rez Hi-way and DVD-Audiobahn may as well merge.
Or this should be cross posted.
Does anyone know what the future of Hi-Res Audio is??
I've heard tales of guys Peermix, working on creating Hi Res music servers for audio file clients. That seems a little out of reach for the average Hifi enthusiast.
Unfortunately the majority of the audience is not listening, and it seems like physical audio medium is on its way out...

HI-rez music servers are not out of the reach of the average guy. All you need is an old Mac Mini or any other computer that has either a USB or toslink out. The mac mini will output 24/96 via toslink into my dac. sound is very good. Lots of 24/96 live recordings on the live music archive as well.

Hi,
I guess merging with Computer Audio as well is a good idea. In the end the only long term viable High Rez source are Computer Files, be they played via a PC, Mac, a 'nux PC or external media-streamers.
One of the most interesting "High Rez" sources on PC are all the HDCD rips if currently played via a DAC that lacks HDCD Decoding. Software decoding these to 20-Bits is surprisingly good.

Basically it's dead. I gave up on it about a year ago, not that I was that into it in the first place. I ripped a few LPs to 24/96 on my mac, and while they sound great it isn't worth the effort. And the few DVD-As I've bought have been mediocre at best.
Downloads are all that's left, even CD is dead.
There have been many outstanding technological advances in most of our life times. Should we expect many more? Based on the past, I'd say yes. Does this mean as you propose, "...physical audio medium is on its way out...", before the owners of the mediums are? No.
I think they should get rid of dvd audio & replace it with blu ray. It does not belong at video or film because some disc have higher rez sound. dvd audio will never work at the sacd site.Ive been reading posts for years. the general thought is dvd audio sucks. I like it but others will post saying other wise. I like all formats & I dont care that much about sound quality.I buy them because I like mch. plus I have more than 1 mch playback if I dont like the sound. lots of speakers help.
I have a lot of concert bds. the movie ones might be more interesting to talk about. I just bought avitar but have not received it yet.
the video site has the most bd reviews believe it or not so thats were Ill post it if theres any thing good to say about it, im not a movie buff. but I like to talk about concert bds. the bd of motley crues sound sucks. but I like the girls on it the best:}tommy has a boob cam!

I think a lot of the SACD crowd might be a little into the voodoo and mystic of the format than the reality.
It has its own flaws and compromises, so SACD is really 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other VS DVD-A or PCM.
Not very many SACD sources were recorded in DSD natively.
If they are very lucky the master came from a legitimate 382kHz sample rate digital master which is rare.
There are still fraudulent upconverted PCM to DSD or as many albums like Elton John (I have SACD) or Steely Dan (DVD-A), the stereo tracks are just the stereo masters prepared for redbook (weather or not it was the digital master or the Analogue Master I can't Say.
I big downfall (or upside to SACD depending on who you are) is there are very few tools to work with SACD natively. I don't know of any (I heard there was work being done at one point) great non linear editing tools.
SACD is also a little more like Vinyl in that it doesn't really have a definite clipping level so engineers have to be a little more careful with how they utilize the headroom and can't get away with playing the same sort of Loudness War Games.
However my Elton John Tumbleweed connection sounds a little rude in the stereo mix because it was mastered in digital HOT then transferred to DSD. The Multichannel sounds great though!!!
DVD-A inferior??
I know it uses more Data than A DSD multichannel if its mastered at 192kHz but PCM is infinitely more accessible with regards to editing tools (which could also be a weak point).
192kHz puts the frequency response in the same realm as DSD, and 384kHz I believe exceeds DSD's capabilities as far as Frequency response.
So is there going to ge a Blu-Ray Audio???
I know there are still a number of SACD's being released. Which is good because it means there is still some glimmer of hope for quality audio. I don't really care much about Concert videos myself. Its good to capture the spirit and energy of the performers, but is seldom High quality audio, in that professional albums at one point in history had hours of labor and crafting put into them.
Screw it I think all music must be produced like Metallicas Death Magnetic a true sonic masterpiece!!!
But seriously what's the story with Blu-Ray --- Audio?
there is a section for bd audio at half.com but theres very few of them.you will find pinks concert there. It does not belong there its a concert video. its an exellent disc I talked about it at the video siteas far as sound quality most sound good with eagle vision discs sounding the best. the ones I have are all dts hd. they dont say how many channels they are but I know there at least 6.1 discs. I dont have a 7.1 rec so I dont know if theres more channels than that.
I dont think there is more because 7.1 is rare. But the eye bd is 7.1 if some one has a 7.1 rec.
ps your into sound quality that is fine. but playback is limited to the discs & 2 channel. I would much rather have 4 tower speakers.
not as good sound quality but a good surround mix played back in dts hd with another amp & more speakers. I like a different sound I read that they have done 44 speakers for theaters maybe imax or someting like that.
They brought it to an expo. I have a 20 speaker set up but I dont have a clue how they did 44 speakers. I found it at the dictionary for dts hd its at the bottom of the page.
