Welcome.
Good to see that the Asylum is continuing to grow.
I've been thinking about picking up an Ella and have one (only one?) question. I am an absolute nut when it comes to hum coming from the transformers when no music is playing, if I can't hear hum from the speakers I sure don't want to hear it coming from the magnetics. So my question is: Is the power transformer a toroid? If not, is it quiet? I've built several amps now using Hammond transformers and find the 300 series is OK but the 200 series (IMHO) is only useable for breadboards. (Gives you my frame of reference.)
It's somewhat subjective I know but I'd like to hear from folks that have built it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

(a satisfied diyhifi customer pops into the new forum) POP! :)I can answer this question pretty confidently. The power transformer IS a toroid and it is DEAD quiet.
I've had the same experience with some of the cheaper hammond iron; quite a bit of vibrational hum even w/ a low current draw.

All the power transformers used in every model is a toroid. The Ella is stone quite... just watch the sensitivity though. It is very a very sensitive amp so trying to use it with active gain stages is a recipe for noise. You only need about 0.1-.2V to run the amp to full power. I'm using mine with a couple of the S&B 102 transformers built into a DAC and it works wonderfully.
