I was considering an DIY TDA1541/Phillips CDPRO transport (I2S interfaced) non-oversampling , no filter, tubeoutput as seen several places.
I was told by a friend that 24/192 IS the future.
I do not beleive him!
Best Regards

Yes, there are many crappy CD's on the market...maybe even most CD's.
But there are also some excellent CD's: Mapleshade, XRCD (Jazz
at the Pawnshop a notable example), Classic Records gold reissues,
etc. The musicianship may not be to one's liking on a specific disc,
but the sound quality can be superb. It's all in the miking and mastering.
To prove that a format is not poor, it only takes ONE example of
an outstanding production....and there are a number of CD's with
excellent sound.
A Jazz at the Pawnshop fan!!I hear that there is a Pawnshop 2 AND 3 out there. Have you got them/do you have an opinion on them?
Can you recommend any similar high quality acoustical jazz cds?
Exactly! - many vinyl releases sound awfull as well because of poor recording and mastering - no one blames the format. with 44/16 there's no headroom for mistakes - get it wrong when you downsample from a higher bit rate and sample rate (if it was mastered at such?) and you soon run into audiable artefacts - done properly it will sound superb.
THEY (The industry) will kill the CD format if we like it or not!
It's not about a better format, it's all about making again huge amount of money (profits). Philips and Sony milk the 'RED BOOK Patent Cash Cow', until the last drop (profit) is expelled. That's the way it works.
Are these new formats, speak DVD-A and SACD, better than the Red Book Format? Well, I sure hope so. The big question for the industry is now, will we be buying big time into yet another format? Remember, many of us replaced their music libraries once before from vinyl to CD, because we were made to believe, that CD sounds sooooo much better! Yeah right! I can put a piece of vinyl onto my turntable rig and blow away any CD rig, rgardless of make and price. That' the difference between infinite information against chopped liver (18/18/20/24 - 44.1/96/192 or whatever hacked up format).
But as they say, 'the proof is in the pudding'.
If you can get emotionally involved into the music, and can listen to it for hours on end, than you have found a piece of gear, you can cherish, regardless of format. I for myself rather spend ten thousand dollars or so for a premium turntable, tonearm and cartridge instead investing in a silly expensive player, which craps out on me, after some years of playing time. I just bought from somebody 3500 (!) pieces of classic and jazz vinyl for 2000 $. Approx. 2800 LP's never opened yet.
Well my friends, that's big listening pleasure, for years to come. Meet that!
Do I have a great 'sounding' CD player? Of course I have! Did I put SACD and DVD-A up against my turntable rig? I sure did, many times by now! Do these new digital formats smoke my vinyl playback system? Wishful thinking! Not a chance!
Have a nice day,

I've heard alot of crappy sounding vinyl in my day. Late 60's and early 70's rock that is compressed and noisy, with a limited frequency range. The new formats, even CD when well mastered are superior in most respects to most vinyl recordings IMO. Regards, HiFi Guy
You've repeated the most profound statement in audio...> > > If you can get emotionally involved into the music, and can listen to it for hours on end, than you have found a piece of gear, you can cherish, regardless of format. < < <
Then crapped the BIGGEST CROCK OF SHIT in audio...

Now wipe your mouth, gather the two brain cells that you have deliriously roving that vast cavern of emptiness you call a brain and pray. Pray that those two wayward cells are capable of bearing slightly more intelligent cells than their parents so that one day, certainly in the far distant future, you will be able to perceive the moronic contradiction of the waste you have spattered on this board.
There's nothing that pisses me off more on the DIGITAL forum then someone who spews (not only incorrectly, but incoherently) the superiority of vinyl over ANY format.
Hi Mr. Joe!How are you today?
Don't get so upset, it's bad for your heart.
The language has always been a great conveyer to bring the best and the worst out of people. Well, in this case...
Take it easy man, open a good bottle of scotch and listen to a nice piece of music. Vinyl perhaps? It's suppose to be the best cure for bad 'digititis'!

Hey Joe...
Maybe its time to get that Zoloft Prescription filled
take it over to hi rez. Digital has moved past bickering.:)
FOX TV taking over HI-REZ?:-)
Go get pissed off somewhere else. Come back when the veins on your forehead arent popping anymore.
A little harsh, but funny nonetheless :-)

I was beginning to wonder if the world's supply had dried up.
Build your DAC and educate your friend on the difference between theory and practice.
As, by definition, every CD is 16 bit/44.1 kHz. If it isnīt, itīs not a CD (Philips Red Book dixit)Regards
dacs you should have great sound. I have two SACD players and my AN dac still sounds better when comparing the hybrid.
