I have used LMS but that was a number of years ago and my interface at the time was just a Logitech supplied remote control... nothing fancy like an iPad screen. As for HQPlayer, it gives you the flexibility to 'tune' and upsample everything to DSD if you wish. It -can- improve sound quality over Roon alone but in my findings it wasn't huge, but a slight incremental step up with the right settings. I am running just Roon at the moment w/o HQPlayer.
I can't comment on Roon with any streaming services. I run Spotify, Pandora, or Amazon Music now and then but outside of Roon and usually in the car. For home use I mostly play from my own music library that resides on the Mac Mini & SSD.

Abe, If you have only tried LMS with the Logictech Remote, you have not tried LMS. The Logitech Remote is the worst way to control LMS and hardly anyone uses it. Why don't you try LMS with your MicroRendu and use your Laptop and Either Squeeze Ctrl (Which is much better than Roon Remote) or Ipeng. And LMS is completely FREE !!IMO, LMS is much more powerful and more feature rich than Roon except for the Metadata aspect. But, if you are into the Metadata, you won't like LMS. But LMS is superior as far as controlling your devices, Remote apps are superior, It's much faster, Better interfaces with Streaming services and Internet radio, has a plethora of developers throughout the world designing neat stuff for it as well.

I was shocked that Roon will only let you play 1 of your Devices at the same time.I have Roon playing the same tune in my office and down in the basement right now. Works for me.
I have no reason to resurrect LMS in my system. When I had my Squeezebox I used it as a secondary system up in the kitchen. LMS was running on the Mac Mini server down in the basement. Sold it all a few years ago.

I would not want to listen to what my wife listens to. I am talking about having 4 or 5 different Play Queues with Different Devices all playing at the same time on the same network that I can control with my Phone.... LMS can do that. You certainly don't have to try it..... Even if it's free. I tried Roon a couple times. I am always willing to find something better.

Roon can do this too but having only 2 people in our household I really have no need for more than 2 devices at a time.
If Roon is of no benefit to you stick with LMS.
