In Reply to: RE: New to DACs here...for better sound, get better CD player, or get a DAC for current player? posted by mtrot on October 04, 2016 at 10:03:17
If I were you, the first thing I would try is to connect the analog front channel outputs to your receiver and listen to two channel stereo with the Oppo sending out an analog signal to your receiver. If it sounds better that way, it means the DAC in your receiver sucks. A friend of mine had the same exact problem and when he connected his Oppo BDP-103D via analog rather than HDMI, it resolved his problem completely.
Good luck,

Thanks, I know I did do that when I first got the Oppo, and felt at the time that I couldn't really hear much difference, so I went with the HDMI connection for its convenience. But that was two receivers ago. Maybe I will try it again.
The DACs in this Denon X5200 are much newer and more advanced than those in the BDP-83, so I doubt they "suck", relative to those in the Oppo, but they may when compared to outboard DACs.
I'm not sure, but I think you want an Oppo BDP-85 if you intend to use its analog audio. I think the distinction between the 83 and 85 is the same as it is with the 103 and 105: The 105 has superior analog audio.

Well, I think if I were to get another Oppo to use the analog outs now, I'd go ahead and get the 105. But at this point, I'm waiting to see what the new Oppo 4K/UHD Universal disc player looks like.
I also want to find out how it would sound if I get a DAC and send the Oppo's digital output to the DAC, and then run the analog output of the DAC into an analog input on my receiver, thus bypassing the DAC in the receiver.
Yeah, your best bet is probably to get a better sounding DAC. I have an Oppo BDP-105D in my system and although I have gotten used to its sound, I prefer the sound of the DAC in my TASCAM DA-3000 DSD recorder. I don't know if Ive ever heard a better sounding DAC than the BurrBrown PCM1795 DACs my TASCAM. I listened to a $3200 April Music Eximus DP1 for a couple of years and when I bought the $1000 TASCAM DA-3000 I thought it sounded as good or better. There is no question that finding the right DAC makes all the difference in the world. I just wish they weren't so darned expensive. ;-)
