So my Marantz SA-8260 will not play redbook cds. It plays SACD's just fine. I brought out my old Sony DVP-S7000 to use as a transport to feed my SimAudio Moon DAC. I don't have a good explanation for this problem. So far I can't tell a difference sonically with redbook cd's. Is the Sony really this good a transport even though it is 19 years old. I always thought it was a pretty cool piece and didn't get rid of it because it seemed pretty solid. Do transports really make a big difference?

Follow Ups:
the Sony S7000/7700 are still respected for being an excellent transport.
This machine is old by modern standards. Who knew?
I've read (more than once) that it is often the components associated with the laser assemblies that cause a lapse in operation - rather than the lasers themselves.
Often, if certain components prone to failure (like capacitors) are replaced, the transport will spring back into life again.
Worth investigating?

at least, you did not lose the SACD playback.
So far the Sony sounds absolutely fine as a transport, so until something better comes along I will use that for redbook playback. For some reason I am reluctant to buy a new disc spinner. I come across used ones often enough. The Marantz was new old stock and I had hoped it would last longer. Maybe i'll break down and buy an Oppo at some point. I'm listening right now to the Sony, Moon combo and it's really good.

Yes transports do make a difference. It is not difficult, in my experience, (given the components) to demonstrate that a great transport into an average DAC sounds better then an average transport into a great DAC. Something is going on other than jitter rejection.
Coincidentally both of your transports have Sony mechanisms. Purists may hold that a pure CD/SACD transport should be better than a DVD one (everything being equal) but if you can't hear the difference then why worry?
As for the Marantz it sounds like the OPU has packed up. These dual laser jobs don't seem to have great longevity, I have been through quite a few over the years. Even if the lasers function OK the mechanism for swapping between the two can be prone to failure. If you want the Marantz fixed you , or the repairer, need to find a Sony KHM - 230AAA optical pickup unit ( my information source advises). No idea what the availabilty is.
If you mean to ask: Do different transports sound different, for better or worse, or just different for that matter, then absolutely yes...
