In Reply to: RE: my CD player died, what should i get at around 500? posted by erik_sq on September 28, 2016 at 14:16:13
And i am not really into computer files or streamed music. I am sure it is all very good and all, but i tend to believe that statement to the wonderfullness of new breakthroughs in recorded music tend to be overhyped and stress technicality over musicality. In other words why is that in the audiophile world , where money is no object, the highest level of recorded playback is still the lp?

You can usually find a Monarchy CD player on the gon for under $500. Very well regarded. Tube output, R2R dac chip. BOLO for the PCM63 chip.

Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
My system, amp and preamp are all tubes, so i don't want to have too much tubieness. The tubes in the CD players are there to smmooth things on the output side which works great for solid state gear.
Also streaming is very cool. Thousands of albums you've wanted to listen to, but didn't want to drop the money to buy. Try it. I bought a used Sonos Connect on epay for $250 U.S. All the music you can stand.

You're welcome. I understand. Then check out Schiit Audio. I like his SS output stages. No opamps. FETs used on the Yggdrasil I want. Sounds like you would want the Modi or Bifrost. Oh shoot you need a transport. Setting up a music server is easier than it sounds. Just start with an old computer with the PONO free software and go from there. You just may like having access to all your CDs from your phone or tablet. It really is the future.
The LP as still the ultimate in fidelity? I would suggest that title has passed to the 192/24 digital file. Give it a try. You may be very pleased with the way they sound with SET amps and high efficiency speakers.

I'm sorry, that's just such a loaded statement and one that I disagree with. It's not very nice to others either to post a statement of subjective truth disguised as a question. It's right up there with "When did you stop beating your wife?" or "Why am I still the only smart person in the room?"
Make yourself happy, of course, but I'm much happier in digital land.
What I personally disagree with is spending more than $1,000 on a music server. It's especially annoying when those servers are limited, or iPad only or are supported for about 3 months. :)
Best,
Erik
Exactly what is offensive as i am confused by your statements. If i caused you to be offended i certainly did not intend to. When i first posted i expected to receive suggestions of various brands which i have not listened to and would lend some weight to a purchase of said brands if the poster explained why. I checked on ebay and there are just too many to go through. I was looking to get first hand info on some of the better sound units.

I actually thought it was more funny than offensive, but a little more subjective than you thought. :) If it was truly offensive I would have left it to the moderator
When you write: "... why is that in the audiophile world , where money is no object, the highest level of recorded playback is still the lp?"
It is a subjective statement about the sound quality of an LP vs. digital, which not all, certainly not me, agree with. :)
Best,
Erik
LOL!
