I just got my old Yamaha CDX-510U out of mothballs. Sounds as good as ever but it won't read CDs I have burned, even Music CD-Rs. I'm sure that it used to, but is my memory failing me or what? Your input is most welcome.

How about an update?
Me thinks your memory is failing too- my CDX-810(same vintage)- never played CD-R's. In fact right now it plays nothing- won't recognize any disc. Too bad- as the unit was a great sounding piece. Now it just sits on the shelf.

My old Audio Alchemy DDSIII CD transport, based on a Sony ES transport mechanism would not play CD-Rs sometime. The early CD-Rs which were a darker green color would sometimes simply not be read. But then later it might play the same disc. It was a very random thing. The later lighter colored CD-Rs gave it no trouble all.
I got 20 years of very heavy use out of it.
Best regards, Ralph
The 1990s-vintage Philips CDC-935 changers that I use reads CD-Rs fine.
It's not an old CD player thing. My Rotel RCD 955AX player I bought in 1992 can play CD-R's no problem. The drawer doesn't open when you hit the button but that can be corrected.
the Bristish made spinners were a little different from the ones made in Japan.
Yep. most older/vintage models of CD spinners will not play the new fangled CD-r(s).
The Yamaha CDX-510U will not play burned discs so your memory is incorrect (mine is too on so many things). The user manual says " This unit has beem specifically designed for the reproduction of Compact Discs bearing the -(insert international CD logo here)- mark. No other discs should be loaded into the player."
