I own a Sony XA777ES with TRL modes and have thought about downsizing by getting rid of the DVD-A and SACD Sony for one machine. Has anyone owned both Oppo and one of the Sony's? Is the sound almost the same, as good as,or better?
Follow Ups:
I own an Oppo 95 and a Sony 5400 for more than a year.
There are both very good, if not as good as high-price ($3,000+) players.
But they sound different.
The Sony is smoother, warmer, the Oppo more detailed. Their strength is that... they don't have any flaw, they are not 'the best' for this or that, but they are very good in every sector.
Thanks for the input. I will have to find a Oppo dealer and give one a try.

I owned an XA777ES, sold it because I thought it sounded underwhelming on Redbook CDs and just okay on SACDs. Bought a Raysonic 128 for CDs and an Oppo BDP 83SE for SACDs, DVD-Audio and Blu-ray audio. While I didn't have the Sony and the Oppo at the same time for comparison I think the Oppo (note: not a 95) sounded better on hi-rez discs. The Oppo also sounds underwhelming on CDs, especially compared to the Raysonic.
First off, I meant it was modded by Tube Rsearch Labs. The company is owned by the brother of Record Research Labs. He was a contract engineer to Sony when some of the players were developed and knows them well. His mod took my SACD 777 to mellower times. The Sony new was detailed but I thought a bit hard or digital, so he tuned it to have detail but a bit more tube like, to coin a phrase.

I own an Oppo BDP-95 and a Sony XA5400ES. Balanced stereo is similar, both excellent if just a bit different. HDMI is similar. But the BDP-95 plays a wider array of discs, including DVD and Blu-ray with superb video. It also offers 7.1 analog, along with processing that handles bass management and lossless codecs so you can use the bypass mode of your processor. (That's important to me, because my Cary Cinema 11a treats 88.2 kHz LPCM as DSD and provides no bass management for SACDs.)
