Are there low priced DVD players with very good DAC built in? It may not make sense to have it built in when so many DACs are availble but like an Integrated amp, a company might do it. Does it make more sense to have the DAC built in into the Integrated amp or the Pre? Wonder what the future holds.
Cheers
Bill

IMHO, there isn't any magic that will render superb analog performance on a cheap chip. There are some DIY mods that claim to work magic on cheap players but these just don't seem credible. It takes good quality, close-tolerance components, excellent power supply, lots of regulation / bypassing, good wire, good jacks-- the list goes on. I don't think $99 at Wallymart is going to get you something you'll love over the long haul since its analog circuitry likely represents less than $1 of the 99.
If you really mean *DVD* player, you might want to look back about 5-7 years in the used market for a DVD player with excellent performance both analog stereo and as a transport. Price seems to depend mainly on reputation plus degree of preservation but you can get lucky for maybe $100 on Craigslist...
It took a couple weeks surfing Craigs [try searchtempest.com] but I recently bought a 2005-ish Pioneer Elite 'flagship' DVD player for $50. The sonics are excellent- true Pioneer 'house sound'-- lean and crystal clear without being fatiguing, excellent bass (maye a tad fat), etc. I like the whole package; it's component-video only but looks fine on my smallish TV. Sucker weighs around 25 lb: solid steel chassis, lots of shielding, lots of good components. I picked a hair out of the tray gears, cleaned the lens, jacks and contacts and it is 'like new.'
Caution, vintage gear is not for every taste but might be worth a try. The future!? I'm still trying to cope with the 90's... My Hollywood insider says that CDs are going away within a year or 2, DVDs a few more years- all to be replaced with downloadable/streaming stuff. You might consider your DVD player will fit as a part of a future computer audio rig.
I had an older Panasonic DVD player (S29 I think) and a Panny BluRay BDP-55 both with above average DACs. I don't know that I'd call them great DACs but they were better than your typical DVD or BluRay player. I still use the BDP55 as a transport on the rare occasion that I need to play a cd. I like my Panny's analog outs better than my Marantz but my outboard DAC sounds better to me than either.
The best I know of "are not" likely considered "low priced"
1)OPPO BDP-93 NuFORCE Edition - $899
2) OPPO BDP-95 - $999
Both have excellent DACs and can be used from the analog outs.
