The Altmann Attraction Dac!
Great reviews, wonderful tone, and runs on a 12v battery.
I had to sell mine to help fund a new venture, and wish I could buy it back. The base unit is about $1200.00 and there are various add ons that top out at around $2300.00. They can usually be found used at a great price. One caveat: No USB...Coax and Optical only.

I think the NAD M51 is right up there in this price range. My neighbour has one on demo and I found it astonishing for the price. They seems to be thin on the ground though -- not sure who has stock.

I own he Nad-m51 and it is excellent and the better the amp the better the performance for the 32 but volume is so good you loose nothing.i have. Parasound Halo running direct.
This is such a excellent dac.i did put in a Hifitung 1.125 T 20mm fuse and it cleaned up
Low level detail greatly.
This dac does everything well with. Warmth and sweetness like a good Vacuumtube.
I would like to mention that I am using Wireworlds best Platinum cables which make a big difference, and recently just hooked up the Bryston bdp which make this unit world class
For $5k invested nothing under$10 k can better this in musicality IMO
I have Done direct comparison with he Weiss 202, and Berkeley mk-2
And I feel no need to spend any more to my external Seagate USB drive using flac files.

The D/A section in the Philips CDC-935 CD player..... But the surrounding electronics needs to be modified to reap the benefits...........
Seems to me that the pot just below on "Best Dac under 1000" didn't draw all this crap and got some serious replies from people who knew something.
Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I don't understand these kinds of posts. What is the point? No one is going to have heard enough DACs in the same system to possibly answer this. People can list DACs under $2,000 that they liked more than others they heard, maybe in the same system, maybe not.
Of course, since you open the door . . .
After a lengthy home audition, I ended up getting the bel canto DAC 2.5 for $1,795 (after modest dealer discount) and I absolutely love what I am hearing with Apple Lossless files played on my MacBook Pro through USB using a modest AudioQuest Forrest cable (and CJ CA200 integrated and Renaissance Audio Preludes with entry level Siltech cables). FWIW I first auditioned the DAC 1.5 and found the 2.5 to be more dynamic sounding, presumably because of the upgraded power supply.
Adaptive or not, I think the USB implementation on that DAC is absolutely superb - As clear and open and neutral as my Simaudio Moon CD5.3 as a standalone player, but with better bass (deeper and more defined and controlled) and drive. Refined and gutsy. Plus it serves as a really nice headphone amp. And, though I am using its fixed output, it can serve as a preamp if I chose to use it that way in the future.
But who knows? Maybe the W4S is better? Or the Nekko? Or the Brifrost for that matter. I haven't heard any of them because I decided to go with a local dealer and home audition.
So why do I bother to reply and mention the bel canto? I don't know - I like it a lot and don't see it mentioned on this forum I guess. Always fun to plug what you own!

There are dozens of great DACs for under $2000. What might be 'best' to one person in his system may not be the 'best' in my setup. It comes down to the system AND personal preference in sonics.
I happen to own the W4S DAC2 and I like it but I haven't spent the time and money to audition more than a few DACs. The few that I did audition were not in MY setup.
I really don't know much about DACs, but a friend just recommended this one to me as an upgrade to replace my Stello DA-100 Signature. The Mytek seems to be quite versatile with all its inputs and digital formats. It costs well under $2000 at around $1500 on eBay.
I have one and I can confirm that it has excellent sound after several weeks of break-in. It works well at all PCM sample rates and also at DSD64 and DSD128. I am using the balanced output direct into my amplifiers so the built in analog volume control is very useful.
About the only downside was availability. It took a month after placing an order before my unit arrived, but it was worth the wait.

I would say the Wyred4Sound DAC 2 with their DAC 1 coming in a close second.

It would be as good as the BiFrost I bet.

Are you in the market for a $2000 DAC, or are you simply curious as to what the rest of us think on this?
