SPDIF input?
Or, - A sub $1000 transport?
Looking for something like the Audio Aero Prima, - only with a digital in.
Anything approaching $2K (retail) is pushing my friend's budget, - but if something comes along...
I was checking out the Vecteur transport, - but it looks like it might be tough to get via Mutine??? Or, - is not made any more?
Not interested in anything like Rega, Music Hall, NAD, etc....
TIA mucho.....

Follow Ups:
If I were buying a CDP today - I'd get as good a DAC as I could get (keeping in mind that in 3-5 years it'll be obsolete) and then get a decent Bluy Ray player (like the low end Oppo) as a transport for it.
You can get a lot of good DAC's right around the $500 mark and a good transport will cost $500 or less.

A used Resolution Audio Opus 21. You should be able to get one for around $1500. A great player.
impressed me ... I've never heard any $1.5K (new) digital player come remotely close to it - in sound quality.

As far as I'm concerned, the Opus 21 was/is the reference for high performance at a reasonable cost. The RA Cantata Music Center is even better, but at close to twice the cost.
It could've been due to some other factors, but listening to it with Avantegarde horns, and the Rhthym loudspeakers, the mid-range never really balanced out with the treble, or, I was hearing some really big holes. I also hated its cheap, plastic, look and feel. It is one of the ugliest players I have ever seen.
The Audio Aero Prima is a much better player IMO, - but it doesn't have a digital in. I might just try to find one and get a digital input installed by a friend...

although it represents fine value, the 21`is certainly NOT the only "reasonably priced reference" in my experience.

it looks like $3400 is a bit steep for him.......
Guess that there aren't any transports left.

I was going to suggest a pre-owned 840c.
Balanced outs a plus.
the RS-232 port is for software update....though it may have other functions. You'll need a null-modem cable for such updates IF you can pry the software out of CAs hot little mitts.
