I mean it's pretty damn good for just over a buck an issue. Is this a form of extreme cheapness or something?
I'd be pretty disappointed if the only magazine reviewing with informative measurements AND subjective critiques went away.
Hell I liked AUDIO and it had nothing on Stereophile.
Follow Ups:
I just wish all of these rags would review more affordable equipment, so that reading a hifi mag wouldn't be so much like reading Playboy. The UK mags are a little better at this, but then i get tired of the Arcam and Cambridge reviews.
Average Chick, or Great Personality Magazines??Thought not.
Well, presumably, the audiophile is interested in purchasing and has in fact purchased in the past items reviewed in Stereophile. That, I guess is a big difference.
Road and Track would be just another consumer reports if it didn't review a Lamborghini or an Aston Martin once in a while.Your mileage may vary, but I've bought quite a number of components that were reviewed in Stereophile, including Sonus faber Amati Homages and the Nagra PL-P preamp and VPA amps. The reviews didn't cause me to buy, but they certainly caused me to add the components in question to my audition list. What more could one want from an audio mag??
Are you suggesting you wouldn't buy a component that was reviewed by Stereophile?
My post was about the different relationship between what is photographed/reviewed in the two mags and the reader of the mags (Playboy and Stereophile). I have of course purchased items reviewed in Stereophile, often BECAUSE of the review.
pay for it.
G'day Tom,I would have thought any person who believes Stereophile is rubbish, corrupt, irrelevant, unethical, biased, reviews bought for or plain old don’t like the magazine would simply not buy it and read it?
If those people who hold the above views had a scintilla of moral fibre & self respect they would not purchase, read or be in anyway associated with the magazine let alone continually whinge about it.
But WHY do people continually trash it? – I don’t know. I guess they are fighting to be relevant and somehow superior to the subject they trash? Who knows?

Any magazine that regularly reviews audio gear that costs more than my car, certainly isn't talking to most of us.
Steve
robert harley just covered the waterfront in tas on the subject of long term loans of equipment and he eloquently put the facts as they actually are.stereophile and tas have both turned me on to great BUDGET gear. they also have exposed me to the creme de la creme, some of which we eventually get to buy.

and masers and (insert unaffordable auto marque here) !!! stereophile also reviews infinity primus 150s. and 360s. they are bargain priced, excellent speakers.
i don't think so.
I dont think so either. And largely because the automakers don't need the auto rags. The much smaller base of the audio hobby changes the relationship between a lot of things.
I live in Australia and Sterophile certainly talks to me both through the knowledge I gain from reading the Mag, as well as being able to talk directly to different reviewers via this forum and email. One example – I bought a Velodyne DD18 sub for use with my 2 channel system. Instead of providing the clean bass I was looking for it sounded resonant and muddy. After reading an old column of Kal Rubenstein, and some exchanges with him on the Speaker forum, I purchased two Auralex GRAMMAs. These decoupled the sub from my wooden floor. Problem solved.

...it's because JA and some of the writers read posts here and will respond to the trolls. If HP or TAS writers did, TAS would be getting criticized a lot more.
I believe that Stereophile has three times the circulation of Stereophile, so more people read it...

THe more that read something the more that are liable to complain....I left out that step if that's what you're asking...if you dont agree with the logic, sorry.

who go apoplectic over the idea of long-term equipment loans, industry pricing, advertising, etc.....Watch 'em come out on the offensive (and I do mean "offensive") now...
when it comes to reader conspiracy stories. I recall a piece written by the editor of a motorcycle magazine about those who claim their opinions and preferences on reviews are directly swayed by advertising dollars - they are simply shills. Boy, that sentiment (essentially an insult to their integrity) pissed her off!Unfortunately, however, there are a few unethical guys out there like Aczel who have directly praised (you guessed it) their own financial investment.
And if being involved in the audio industry gets you an occasional discount, so what? I see nothing wrong with that. I also do not believe that any writer I know of would trade a favorable review for a break on some gear.
There is not a lot of bad gear out there these days. The competition is heavy and it does not take long to get a bad reputation.
It's the same with cars. There are no real dogs out there. Back in the '70s you could get a car already rusting out on the lot (Fiat) or a car that simply would not run (Ford Granada). Every maker produced at least one dog in those days.
> I also do not believe that any writer I know of would trade a favorable review for a break on some gear.>Two reasons you won't see this happen.
First, the writer's credibility is all he has.
And second, the magazine's credibility is all it has - he would be hung out to dry if found out.
Perhaps you remember back in the late 1980s a writer for TAS who was a professional photographer traded a manufacturer some photo work for equipment. He was fired. The policy was any equipment purchases must be done through the magazine (to prevent abuse).
no real dogs....so buy by price or by what you can get in your neighborhood and forget the mags.
Yup, what a perfect, uncontroversial, ethically clear industry.
!
It's only because you believe there is a conspiricy of another sort that you could predict a response like mine....
Did you forget to bring your sense of humor with you into the New Year?
