I felt exactly the same as your 3) about G./LSO's Romeo and Juliette, my first Barbicon recording.
Thanks for the review. Have you heard Michael Tilson-Thomas's Mahler 7 with the LSO (1990s RCA)? Very, very good.
Follow Ups:
I've heard the LSO and his live performance with the SFO. At the opening of the live performance, the poor posthorn soloist cracked all over the place. I felt so bad for him!
My favorite still is Sinopoli's with the Philharmonia.
I may try Bernstein's first go once more, but I thought the playing was a bit ragged at point and not the greatest recording.
What's so special about that, you ask? It's Bernstein conducting the Cleveland Orchestra - I think it may be the only time he conducted in Cleveland? - Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Chris, you're right, it was the only time Bernstein conducted the Cleveland Orchestra. Musicians who played in that concert generally cite it as one of the high points of their time in the orchestra.
The sound quality of that broadcast isn't the best, unfortunately.
